308 FOR ELK

Was considering a new rifle for mostly eastern whitetail with the occasional trip west for elk. was considering the 308. Does anyony have experiance or thoughts on it?

I switch between a 7mm remington magnum and a 300 winchester for elk. I have seen elk shot from 150 yards heart/lung run for a 1/4 mile with a 7mm. These are very tough animals. Even with the 300 i am always making sure to get ready for a second shot. .308 is a great deer gun, but i don't think i would feel confident in its knockdown power for elk. On another note....my grandfather shot every elk he ever took with a 300 savage. I don't think he ever took a shot farther than 100 yards though. I would go with a 30-06 or 7mm as a deer/elk gun. They are not overkill, but have the knockdown power needed. I prefer the 7mm over every other. it shoots flat(2-3 inches of drop at 300 yards with reloads), and will knock anything you want down.

I shoot the 168gr TSX out of my .308 and from my experiences, I wouldn't hesitate to shoot an elk with it. A less than premium bullet may give less than desirable results though.

I wouldn't consider buying a .308 for elk, not when there are so many better calibers out there.

If a 30-06 can be used for elk no reason a .308 couldn't be used. As long as you didn't try to mail bullets to them and used a proper bullet I wouldn't hesitate if I were you. I use a 300 win mag myself but I would use a .308 in certain conditions.

I dropped a cow last year with my .308 no problem. The .308 isnt all that great for longer shots on elk. Like others have said there are many better (ballistically) calibers. .270 short mag may be something to look at or other new calibers.

308 is a good round for Elk. Nothing wrong with it at all.
