Last year there was a designated percentage of permit allocated for each weapon such as (any weapon) which I think was 60% of all tags. with the addition of late hunts & premium hunts does anyone know how the percentage break down, I've made several calls & no one at the division can give me a definitive answer, anybody here able to help me out ?

The way I understand it 60% will still go to any weapon and out of that of that number they will take 5% for the premium hunt and 30% for the late hunt. the archery will still be 25% and muzzle loader 15%.

I believe it goes like this:

- Archery 25%
- Muzzleloader 15%
- Any Weapon 60%

Then, the 60% any weapon is further broken down as follows:

- Early Rifle (Rut) 65%
- Late Rifle 30%
- Premium (any season) 5%

....then don't forget the added opportunity. 15% total additional tags or so. Elk are dying of old age by the herds. Kind of an elk tsunami.

ktc will all units be getting 15% more tags given this year? Or just some units they want to drop age class down. I hope I can draw a tag before we lose the qaulity of the hunt with to many tag holders and lose the chance at harvesting what we all know we have on the great units now. How many think the elk hunts should of been made a once in a lifetime hunt? I know some will say that is what it is now anyway so why not make it a once in a lifetime. The guys or gals who have drawn a tag sure dont want this to happen but would this help the odds a little who have not drawn a elk tag yet?

I think you guys are on track, other than my understanding is that the premium tags are 5% of all rifle, archery and muzzleloader. I have heard second hand that the biologist in my area is recommending no increase in tags based on the aerial counts that were recently finished. I hope they will listen.

Bird,

I asked that very question about what may be the increase for the opportunists. I was told it MAY BE about 15%. That was a estimated guess. I was just passing on what I had heard and understood from a conservation group guy.

I hope 450 is right and he heard right. No increase wouldn't bother me at all.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-25-05 AT 07:45PM (MST)[p]Thanks for the information I guess we will have to wait until April to see the posting of the draws. I dont think units need any increases until after they see the tooth data after the 2005 seasons. Dont change permit numbers until after the 2005 seasons to see if any increases could be made. I still think more bulls will be shot during the late season than they are planning on and some real nice mature bulls at that. I have heard alot of rumors about the elk will be on private property at this time and hunters will have a tough time getting permission to hunt. I guess time will be the factor but I think alot more people will put in for the late hunts starting in 2006 due to the high harvest on mature bulls. What does everyone else think?

You know me bird, I got an opinion on about everything. ;-)

I hope you are right and no increase is made until after the changes are implemented and some data proves a direction. To increase permits on the premise success in November will be lower would be a mistake.

The late hunt success, in my opinion, will mirror the September hunts. By November, I believe, many of the bulls antlers will be broken up. I know first hand what shooting a big broken bull is like and it is a downer. If someone is looking to shoot a trophy bull, I personally would not risk the late hunt for the broken antlers.

I hope they do not up the ante by 15%, but who knows. I sure would like to get through the system before these changes are put into effect. Maybe the changes won't hurt quality, but they surely won't help.

LAST EDITED ON Jan-26-05 AT 08:56AM (MST)[p]There is still a chance to have your voice herd (pun) on this issue. The Bucks, Bulls, OIAL 2005 Permit #s, Information & Management Plans RAC meetings are in March see http://www.wildlife.utah.gov/public_meetings/pdf/05_rac_schedule.pdf for more info.

Jim K. biggame biologist with the UDWR told people at the SE RAC meeting and again at wildlife board meetings that no changes in permit numbers would be considered in 7-8 year old units unless the harvest age objectives were met (info from the harvest and tooth data) and or until the management plans were changed and that these changes would be discussed at these rac/board meeting in March.

A little of the original subject, but I think that the late hunt will still have a high hunter success rate. The bulls group back up in bachelor herds and snow pushes them into more accessable areas. Just pick out the biggest one and shoot!
