Colorado Question

It has been 5 years since I've hunted in Colorado and I'm pretty sure I don't have any points built up. Can anyone recommend a unit/hunt that I can apply for with a slim chance of drawing? Not looking for your honey hole, and feel free to PM me if you like to keep your info quiet. I like to get away from the crowds and don't mind putting in the work.

Well.....I just found out that I actually do have a preference point for Elk and the man on the phone recommended I consider applying for a state wide muzzle loader hunt with just the one point. Said I might find a few good bulls in the units that will accept the tag and a good chance of drawing it.

Anyone have a better plan?

Thanks,

RE: Revised

I would take his recommendation. You would have a decent chance of being drawn for a bull muzzleloader tag. Also, if you put in for a cow tag as a second option, you may draw one if unsuccessful for a bull, and still get a preference point. That way, you could scout an area this year on a cow hunt, and get drawn for sure next year. If you get a bull tag and really want a good area, I recommend that you contact Deerking. He has a hunting consulting business, that for less than the cost of a tag, will show you a good place to hunt. Email me if you want more info.

You can also check out your preference point status yourself online at: http://wildlife.state.co.us/database/

LAST EDITED ON Jan-27-05 AT 00:12AM (MST)[p]Are you open to any season (archery, muzz, rifle) to hunt? MAny units in this state are very easy to draw and you wouldnt have to use your preference point, you can get another and have 2 for the following year. Do you want to hunt high ,low, have a thought on what part of the state? Bull or cow? I would ckeck out CDOW's website and narrow down your options.

Colorado Hunt

Well I would be more inclined to hunt the Muzz tag because it is early in the season, and during the bugle. So many hunters come for the rifle hunt, I try to avoid the crowds.

As far as a unit goes, I would like to find a place where I can driver a 4 wheel jeep as far back in as possible then Hike. I pack my own meat out. So...12000 feet in the Maroon Bells would not be my choice. LOL.

Wife said I would have to buy her a new house if I wanted to mount another 6x6 so I'll be fine w/ a 5x5. IF you can point me to some terrain that won't kill a man I would be much obliged.

I was thinking southwest or Northwest
