WAS WONDERING ON HOW IS THE ELK HEARD IN THIS AREA, AND THE LAND SITUATION. IS IT MOSTLY PRIVATE LAND OR PUBLIC LAND. WOULD LIKE TO PUT MY SON IN FOR A YOUTH HUNT IN THIS AREA. ANY INFORMATION WOULD BE THANKFUL.

Have not hunted (cannot draw), but did a lot of reasearch. Great unit, big, some private but good hunting on public, lots of dark timber, lots of elk, very vocal, lots of big ones, point restrictions in effect this year. I doubt you would be unhappy with this hunt.

I've been fortunate to draw there the last 3 years. First year rifle bull tag (no luck), last 2 years cow tags (lots of luck). They say there are lots of elk, but it is easy to go through a hunt without getting a shot. A friend of mine's son shot a very nice 6X6 opening morning on his youth hunt. I would recommend the unit for your son, possibly pay for a guide if he draws, because the chance for a wallhanger is there.

I don't know the ratio of public to private, but the majority of the unit is in Lincoln National Forest and it borders the Apache Reservation (where there are some monster bulls).

Hope that helps.
