Do you have a caliber\bullet that you would feel confident using on deer and elk if you were hunting both at the same time.

With my muzzleloader I shoot a 300 gr, 50 cal, hornady sst and would feel ok out to 200 yds on elk and deer. Centerfires are probably a litte more tricky.

I would feel comfortable with my 270 using a good 140 or 150 premium bullett or my 300 mag with the 180 grains i shoot in it.

Easy,

300 wsm. 180's.

Elk
Deer

Nice question,

.338 .....????nahhhhh
.270 165gnsp
Gotta custom muzzy from Matt Avance, Tennesee Valley Gunsmith's
.54 cal round ball 85gnFFF out to about 130yds

The rifle I am most comfortable with (read -have practiced most with) is my .338. I shoot 225 gr. Trophy Bonded Bear Claws out of it. That is a little overkill for deer, but dead is dead, so that's what I'll be taking to CO if I hunt both species, or just elk. If I knew I was hunting deer only, I'd spend a lot of time and ammo with my .270 and go with that and 130's.

270 Weatherby Magnum Accumark---140 grain barnes X or 150 grain Nosler Partition.

I generally use 30-06 180-gr. Ballistic Tips on deer and 180-gr. Partitions for elk, but if I had to select one bullet for everything, it would be 180-gr. AccuBonds.

.300 win mag shooting 165 gr. barnes x bullets. used it on deer and moose, and it has exceeded expectations.

For hunting two species I arm myself for the larger, in this case elk. For me that would mean my 30-06 with 180 gr. partitions or my .338 with 210 gr. partitions.

first choice is my 300 win mag with 165 partitions.
backup is a 280 remington with 150 or 160 partitions.

6.5x55 Sweedish Mauser with 140 grain Partitions. Tough enough for anything available in the lower 48 and fun to shoot.

30-06 165gr.
Last buck and bull i shot. dropped on the spot.
makes tracking easy
