I'm looking for any opinions on which would be a better hunt. Which hunt would have less pressure? I've heard that 15 in New Mexico will have bigger bulls but not as many as 61 in Colorado. Just looking for a good chance at a 320 (or better) class bull. Thanks in advance.

I live next to unit 61 in Colo. 2 years ago
a 380 was taken and last year several in the
360s that Im know of. It takes 10 points or
more to draw non res muzzle. Roy in Montrose

rocketman how many points for non-resident archery unit 61 elk do you think it will take this year? I should be getting close to drawing a tag I hope.

Jerkee- Have no idea about 61 but as 15 well if and I say if you can draw a tag 3% odds for unguided nonresident,4% guided nons, and 11% for residents you will have to contend with 4 wheelers, jerks for outfitters not all outfitters but some etc. It is a decent unit. The quality has went down a bit but is alright.

Thanks for the info guys. One thing I definitely don't want to contend with is a lot of hunters on quads or heavily pressured areas. I personally use a quad to help get an animal out if necessary but I prefer to hike and get away from people and roads.

Unless you have a lot of points, luck (unit 15), or are willing to buy an exspensive tag, forget both units.

Jeekee,
I hunted 61 first rifle elk only season last year. Took 8 points to draw. If you have the points apply for the muzzleloader tag. The only problem with the early rifle elk only season is that DOW allows way to many cow elk killers in the unit. So there are alot of hunters in the field. I consider 61 a decent trophy quality unit with alot of bulls. If DOW wants to allow cow killers let them kill them after the first season when the deer/elk combo seasons are under way. Good luck.

Jerkee,

I had a cow elk blackpowder tag in 61 last year. Once I got off the trails I saw no other hunters and was very satisfied with that unit. I did see a couple of very nice bulls in the 300-350 range that I could have shot easily. If you are willing to get into some of the steeper canyons you will see few to no people during blackpowder season.

Thanks again. Points aside I just wanted to make sure that there really are some good bulls there. One state's trophy unit is definitely different than others and from what I've heard 61 is considered second tier when compared to units 10 or 2. It just seems like a good place to hunt now rather than wait for unit 10.

BeanMan- How vocal were the elk while you were hunting last year?

Jerkee,

They were mostly vocal at first and last light. It was very warm, not good conditions for getting early rut going. Towards the end of the week they were getting a little more vocal.
