Anyone hunt this area? are there very many ELK? Are there very many good bulls? I am not looking for specifics, just a general evaluation of the area. Thanks

I've never hunted it, but I've done some fishing/camping there (I live in Gunnison). My impression is that it's a good unit that doesn't take a lifetime's worth of points to draw. I think you could take a good bull with some scouting/leg work.
That's my $0.02

Thanks. I will be there in summer with some time to scout, was just wondering if it was worth trying to draw for muzzleloader season. My family is all from Gunnison, my Dad is spending summers up there, but none of us live there now( i was born there)

I guide flyfishing trips in 66 during the summer. I was fortunate enough to hunt elk there last season 1st rifle(first elk hunt) and take a 7x6. He was not huge, but a great first bull. Lots of hunters unless you want to get way out and up. I don't know about other seasons. We saw quite a few elk.I saw about 15 bulls killed come through town during the first season.2 were really nice. That unit is known for quite a few elk, but no monsters really.
hope this helps.

i have hunted and filmed elk in 66 for the past
30 years. It went draw about 9 years ago for
elk. I agree with the above lots of elk but size is so so.
Much better than before draw. Most 6s are in the 280 class.
bull cow ratio is more than doubled since draw to
about 40 per 100 cows post season count. A good
unit that takes very few pts except for muzz. Many
of the 76 elk drift over the divide into 66.
One day next few years will be a very good unit
once they are allowed to keep growing. Roy in Montrose
