Wyoming regulations state, if you are nonresident hunting the wilderness you must with a outfitter or a resident who has a permission slip. This a bogus law!!!! this is to help the outfitters, because I can wonder round wilderness all I want fish & camp but can't hunt!!!! I guess it really doesn't matter to me because the last time I drew a elk tag was 97. If they change the drawing system it will make a difference to me. Has this law ever been tested in the court system? Just wondering what all of your view on this is?

I was born in Wyo and used to hunt wilderness when I was a young-dumb teenager! Not that I'm 30 years older and brighter and moved out of state I can't big game hunt the same area without a guide! I believe you can actually bird or small game hunt in Wyo wilderness without a guide and it is just big game hunting that requires a guide. If you know a resident and can talk him into getting a guides license he can take you but must be in the vicinity while you are hunting.

It is truely one of the dumbest laws in the US! I've spoken to the WG&F personally about this reg and they put their arms up in the air and smerk! Obviously Wyo residents aren't complaining because it keeps that many more hunters out of wilderness. The law was manufactured by Wyo outfitters so you know they are tickled to death with the law.

This is fairly similar to the guide requirement in Alaska. Guides are required by nonres to hunt dall sheep, grizz, brownbear, and mtn goats but no guide is required for moose, bou, black bear, bison, muskox, etc.

If you want to talk about discrimination...sick'um USO!!!! I don't think either of these regs really affects how much $ USO makes so I have an idea they will never take these matters to court?

JimS, I would debate the part of your comments about being brighter. As for lawsuits, there is one currently in litigation. However, if its in Judge Downes Federal Court, the guy will lose. The Judge has ruled in Wyoming's favor everytime someone has a challenged a Wyoming hunting law. As for the USO, they stand to benfit from this type of legislation. So you won't likely see them in Court. Besides, we need some room to breath, got enough greenies and utards in these parts as is...

Jimbo, I spoke with Dave R. yesterday. He'll be here for some spring fishing in two weeks. Maybe you can come up for a day.

just for an fyi, the license a resident needs to get to take a non res in the wilderness is very easy to get. its free, all they have to do is call g&f in cheyenne and its pretty much a done deal. its a bogus law, but to be honest, its pretty easy to get around. i dont see it being changed anytime soon-its been challenged and kept a bunch of times already. i'd encourage non residents to just get the non commercial guides license, then if the opportunity arrises and you meet some folks from out of state, you can do them a favor.
