I'm looking at booking a hunt in the Lolo zone w/ an outfitter for a drop camp. Just curious if anyone has hunted the area and has any advice to offer. I will be hunting with rifle in the early part of October. Thanks for any comments!

I have hunted there warthog. It's a pretty big unit. Do you know where the outfitter is planning on dropping you off?

I've mainly hunted the North Fork Clearwater & Skull Creek. I do know that elk #'s are not what they used to be but tags are capped (1600 rifle tags for unit 10 & 12). You will most likely have to hunt hard to find elk but there should not be too much pressure to mess up your hunt.

The highest ridges top out around 6800 which is ok but the terrain is steep and for the most part heavily timbered and/or brushy. Good Luck!

Thanks for the information, foxtrot. I am not sure which drop camp our outfitter is planning on letting us off at, but when I find out more, I'll let you know. Also if you had your choice of when to hunt in Oct-early Nov, when would you go?

I think Foxtrot pretty well nailed it. Unfortunately herd numbers aren't what they were. They were probably at there best in the early to mid 90's and have slipped quite a bit since. I don't want to alarm you too much though. The last couple years have shown the beginings of a turnaround from the numbers I've seen. There shouldn't be much winter kill to worry about this year, winter was practically non existant in most of the mountains it seems. If you are going with an outfitter they should know what the conditions are like where they are dropping you and that should help some. Please let us know when you find out some more, see if you can get a feel for any near by drainages from them. Personally if it was me I would want October over November in that area.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-23-05 AT 08:29PM (MST)[p]I would have to agree with IDkTm on Oct. vs Nov. Although I love the Nov BP hunt in the panhandle the snow can get ridiculous. This does bring the elk down & stack them up however we have a main road that the county will plow up to where we camp. You won't have that luxury in the middle of Unit 10.
Oct. you'll also have a better chance of bulls still bugling that 1st week.

I am hoping to catch our outfitter this next week on the phone to get a better location on the terrain/drainages, I will let you know then. I will probably book in Oct.- too many big whitetails to chase in WI in Nov w/ the bow.

If anyone still checks this forum, I have a better idea of location on my hunt in Idaho. I will be in Unit 10, 9 miles East of Black Mountain, on Lost Ridge between Collins and Snow Creek. I will be out there the 21st of October at a drop camp. Still looking for any advice/comments. THANKS!!

Get in shape. I've fished some of the area around Collins Creek, if it the one I'm thinking of. Steep country, but looks like good elk country too. What outfitter are you going with? Is it Ridgerunner outfitters? By October 21 there may be snow so I'd pack accordingly.

Yeah, the getting in shape is on my to-do list, shouldn't be an issue. It is Ridgerunners that I am booking with, my buddy went with them last year and had a great hunt. No trophy's, but enough to satisfy my hunt. I would love snow over rain if it was consistent. I am just looking forward to seeing some big country again and a chance to be hunting in the fall. Thanks for all your help, if you have any more tips, they are welcome.
