Was reading through the regulations i just picked up and noticed that they are having a youth bull hunt on the blackfoot-clearwater game range (Boyd Mountain, HD 282). This is one of the primary wintering ranges of the Bob Marshall.
They're only giving out 1 tag and its only for 12-14 year olds. I've applied for game range tags since i could and have got drawn cow tags three times.
This would be one hell of a tag if you could draw, if the snow hits early enough there can be up to 1000 elk on the mountain. If any of you guys know any youngsters in montana you should definately point this out to them. Im not sure how many will apply.
Hopefully this is an inclination that they might be doing the same thing soon thats open to all ages.
Curious if anyone else on here besides me has hunted the game range before?

My younger daughter (14) now would love that tag! Not familiar with the range, has there ever been a bull hunt there? Glad to see more youth opportunity in Mt though the last few years. My older daughter drew a late hunt youth tag below Bozeman when she was 13, she shot a nice 350 bull.

i know that way back when you could shoot bulls off the range, but not in 25-30 years at least. its not a huge area but so its pretty easy to figure out where abouts the animals will be. Im not sure you could count on a 350 class bull, but if the weather cooperates i think who ever draws the tag should have a really good chance at at least a six point. I have a nephew whos 12 so he has 3 chances at it. one thing about it you dont have to worry about somebody else having a ton of points.

Thanks for the heads up Randy11. I'll certainly be encouraging any youngsters I can. Were you successful with those cow tags and when were they. I've heard that quite a few tags have gone unfilled the last couple of years. It's a great area and would be a fun hunt for cow or bull. I haven't hunted it but for sheds, going to encourage my wife to put in there this year.

My entire family has filled their elk tags every time we've drawn, i think 11 total over the last 15 years or so. im not sure how the 2004 hunt went by i know a few guys that got their cow. I drew in '03 and i saw over 400 head in one day alone. They gave out 100 tags that year and i heard over 70 people got their cow, but i havent seen any fwp stats to validate that.
