I hunted deer in this area last year and I saw a couple of bulls. The elk season had started when I saw the bulls, a spike and a rag 5 point. I saw lots of cows too but I didn't see than many other elk hunters when the elk hunt opened. The deer opener was really crowded but the elk hunt didn't seem that bad. Was it just the area I was in, or is the rifle elk hunt like that in the rest of the unit? After seeing those bulls last year I am thiniking about buying an elk and deer tag for this coming fall. The seasons will overlap more this year than they did last year. Any impressions or experiences you have had hunting elk or deer in the bear river unit? Thanks for the info.

Here is a pic of the area I was hunting. I saw tons of elk in here early in the year, would be good for archery hunting I think. The second photo is of my camp after the first snow storm of the year. I had a good time, but got sick right as the weather started getting good.

Looks like great country.... we are going to hunt Idaho archery elk this year... that looks alot like the country we will be hunting. But I think we will be farther North.

That is some great looking country! I have hunted that zone with an "A" tag. Were I was there were a lot of hunters on both the bow and rifle hunt, but more on the rifle.

During the last 4 years I've only hunted the Bear River zone a handful of days when the any weapon bull elk season has been open. I have never bought a Bear River zone tag but have considered buying the Bear River A tag the last couple years. I've only killed a couple deer in the Bear River zone but still feel like I know the area fairly well. IMO it would be a mistake not to pull the trigger on the first raghorn that you see if not the first spike. I've heard some of the locals call the opening of the any weapon bull elk hunt the "bull wars" because so much orange is covering the hills. From my experience the opening of the bull hunt does put more hunters in the hills but I have seen worse in other areas.
If you think the extra money is worth the tag go for it but I would recommend you make up your mind before July 1st. After July 1st the non-resident elk tag will be $372.50 instead of the current $338.50. I doubt that it will happen but there is also a chance that the nonresident elk tags could get sold out before the end of the summer. Here's a link to the current quota for nonresident tags.
