As I said in previous posts, this will be my first elk hunt. Does anyone have any advise on using elk scents. I have used various scents successfully on whitetails and I'm considering using them on elk. I've seen them advertised but I haven't read any articles where someone has used them on elk. I will be hunting in central Idaho the begining of October.

I'm partial to the HS "Earth Scent" wafers; have had much closer encounters using those, along with frequent use of scent eliminator spray, than several different "elk" scents I've used in past years. I think that would hold true even more so during an October post-rut hunt ...

THE PINE TREE NEIDLES CRUSHED UP MAKE A SUPER COVER SCENT.
So does the dirt from fresh dug mole hole push-ups.
along with a little fresh cow (elk) urine.
if your hunting next to burn areas use the charcoal from the burns,
I use them all.
but the best seams the be placing your hunting close in a bag, when you get back from hunting,
and before you start cooking,
this bag usally has all the ingreadiance mentioned above in it.
and place it in a warm place this will help them absorb the oders.
a dark plastic bag works great if there is sunlight to heat it up
or the campfire raident heat will also work.

Another good thing to do is use clothing that covers your scent.
I thought "scent-loc" was a big gimmick until I used it on my elk hunt. It really blew my mind how well it worked. Along with the natural scents already mentioned, and some scent loc clothing, you should be good to go. Even with cover scents, and scent loc clothing, you still need to watch the wind and use it to your advantage whenever you can.

Thank for you input everyone. It looks like basicly the same tactics I use on whitetails.
Now; I know that the rut is almost over on Oct 1st. but isn't there still some elk still looking to breed at this time? And if so Cow in Heat urine would still maybe atract a bull right? If this is true does anybody have any recomendations on what brands of cow in heat scents work best?

LAST EDITED ON May-04-05 AT 05:52AM (MST)[p]your so right.
the cows that didn't take come back on in heat, mid of oct.
along with some first year caves.
i have heard bulls screaming all the way into the first of november.
or i think i have.
they could be hunters.
the big key is their nose.
a couple years a go i starter making a elk decoy,
and have heard back from 37 hunters. they have all thanked me for helping them kill their elk using my decoy.
so i believe sight is the next key hurtle to overcome.
sound is the key to getting the attention.
so there you go.
smell like an elk.
look like and elk.
and sound like and elk.
Then cook your self and family up some steaks.
Maybe this summer i'll make up some more decoys.

The elk will definetly by bugling and chasing the cows around on Oct. 1st. This is when they are really going up where I hunt. As for scents I like those elk piss wafers. And I use all the human scent eliminating stuff I can.

Thanks guys. I'm going try everything I can to get a bull. I'll be hunting Idaho area 27 Oct 1 thru 11. I uderstand this area is really rugged. I'm going to get in the best shape I can. I just hope its enough for an enjoyable hunt. I'm kida limited as to what I can do. I crushed my ankle last year and Dr's say they really can't do anything for me. Down the road when I can't stand the pain anymore they can fuse the bones so that I won't have any movement in my foot and that just isn't acceptable to me at this time. Well wish me luck and thanks again for your input.
