Elk/muley combo

I am looking to book a elk/muley combo hunt in a year or so. I have hunted public ground for muleys in Colorado the past two years and have only been able to come up with a 19" buck in unit 3, which is over crowded. I was wondering if anyone had any experience with outfitters they recomend, and which state would be best. I am not after the next world record. Just a nice 5x5 or 6x6 300+ elk and a 24" 4x4 or better muley. I live in Missouri and just started going out west in 2003. I am getting married next year and I may not get to keep going, so I want this hunt to count. Montana looks the most affordable but I have heard the elk are not there. Any advice? Thanks in advance for your help.

I think your going to have to narrow it down a bit....I think just about every western state (MT, ID, WY, CO, UT, NM) could offer a combo hunt like you have described, especially if you are willing to pay for an outfitter.

You should decide what type of hunt you are looking for, i.e. horseback wilderness or private ranch? Do you want to drive or fly? How much are you willing to spend?

You already have some minimums for quality, which I think are very achievable in any western state.

Check out as many outfitter as possible to determine who offers the type of hunting, then be sure to check references.

Good Luck to ya!

You maybe should decide to not get married, and hunt whenever you please!

Looking at Colorado, Montana, or Wyoming right now. Would like to keep the trip around 4000, tags included.

Ya got it buddy combo man. All the elk in montana vanished. And Utah just eliminated all the Nonresident tags. I think Wyo is sold out for 5 years in advance. And Whirling desease killed all the elk in Idaho.
Rut good luck

Looks like my best option is to hope an elk escapes from a game farm here in Missouri

Go to hunts.net you will find a good hunt there.

They offer great chances of bulls in the 300 plus range and giant muley's.

If you want a do it yourself hunt, check out the Bighorn mountains in north central Wyoming and also the Medicine Bow Mountains in Southest Wyoming.
