WHAT IS THE BEST POWERBELT BULLET SIZE TO USE ON ELK. I SHOOT A T.C. HAWKEN MODEL MUZZ. WITH 110 GRAINS OF POWDER. ALSO WHAT WOULD THE EFFECTIVE RANGE BE FOR THE LOAD YOU RECOMMEND. THANKS!

LAST EDITED ON Jun-10-05 AT 08:57PM (MST)[p]My group uses both 348 grain aerotips and 405 grain aerotip powerbelts. You don't mention what powder you are using. My most accurate load is 95 grains of 777 with a 405 grain powerbelt. My load has sufficient power for an elk out past 100 yards, but I limit myself to 100 yards max due to the open sight requirement.

And your statement that you use 110 grains of powder without knowing what bullet you are using doesn't hold water. Every gun is different and you have to find its particular "sweet spot" for a particular gun and powder. I couldn't hit the broad side of a barn with powerbelts with 777 unitl I dropped my load down below 100 grains.

In other words, you are going to have to pick a bullet, and then work up a load that suits your gun. My brother has the same exact gun I have and his gun shoots 348 grain powebelts best at 110 grains of 777. When I tried this load in my gun, I got 4 inch groups at 25 yards.

Also, go to the muzzleloading forum and put in a search for "powerbelts" and you will find lots of info.

I shot a mature bull last year with my 50 cal T/H sidelock. I used the 348 Aerotips and had good penetration. I used 100gr FFF BlackPowder. I don't like shooting the Pyro/777/Cleanshot because I enjoy the smell and smoke. I tried 90-120gr loads looking for the best accuracy and came up with the 100gr BP as best. I put 3 bullets into the big old bull at 40-90 yards away, lung shots. I was happy enough with the performance and would use them again.

Great thread and a timely as well since I now have to get prepared for a Colorado Muzz hunt.

Does anyone use a TC Omega .50 cal? If so...what load are you using? I just want a starting point as I will have to work up a load also. I used to use pellets and a scope so of course I will need to start over.

Recommendations?

Cheers

50 cal. TC Omega. 105 grains of 777 and a 245 grain Aerotip Powebelt for deer and elk. You don't need to launch a canon ball at them to put one down but I understand the thought behind heavier lead.
