I can't believe we finally drew a tag. I know very little about 16A. Any info would be appreciated. Is a guide needed in this unit or can it be done self guided?

Thanks in advance,

Bill

LAST EDITED ON Jun-22-05 AT 09:12PM (MST)[p]Congrats, me and 3 others on my application drew for the first rifle hunt! I'm pretty excited!

16A is a great unit with high elk densities. Which hunt did you draw? Last year I was showing the unit to a couple of friends of a friend who drew Nov. cow tags and had never been in the unit. We were there during one of the Oct. bull hunts and ran into three guys who had bull tags and had never been in the unit before either. When the sun started to rise on the first morning these three guys got into several bulls and killed two. One of them was a 330-type six point. I like the east end of the unit best, but that is just personal preference because the entire unit is loaded with elk. Most of the unit is fairly gentle country, with a little bit of rough country on the west edge.

Jeff!

What's up? I drew Unit 15, bow 1st hunt for elk. Unit 24, late hunt for deer(MD). Antelope, Ibex, & Bighorn....unsuccessful

John drew for Oryx depridation in Feb, and muzzleloader deer, unit??, hunt??? Same unsuccessfull for him on BH, Ibex, and antelope.

What about you?

The tags we drew are rifle oct 15-19. My brother, my son and myself drew the tags. It will be my sons first elk hunt.

You don't need a guide in this unit. Get a map and send me a PM. I can point you to several places. The place is loaded with Elk. Get off the roads and you have it to your self.

I love that unit :)

fairly roaded up in many parts. Getting off roads (miles) is kind of hard sometimes in areas. stay away from the gypsy camps.

There is no problem getting off the road far enough that 99% of the folks will not got.

Get a good map and you can learn a bunch by talking to a Game & fish guy.

Send me a PM when you get maps and I can help some.

Tanker: Good job on the draw. I applied for elk and antelope in NM. I drew my third choice elk tag which is unit 23 second archery hunt. I did not draw for antelope. Unit 15 is right across the state line from me, so I can help you pack out your big ol' bull. Be sure to keep in touch. By the way, I drew deer tags in Utah and Colorado. Later

Depends on if your talking about unit 16a in Arizona or New Mexico. I definitely would prefer one over the other.
