I was looking for 2 New Mexico DIY archery landowner tags with good elk populations. Not looking for 400 pt bulls just looking for a good hunt without getting screwed. Any info would be great.
thanks guys, Hatrick
P.S. what would one usually go for $2000-3000?? Prefer High country with aspens and pines.

It sounds like you are looking for something in the northern part of the state. Go to the New Mexico web site and get the list of landowners with tags. Start calling.

We hunted New Mexico two years ago for $1500 archery just South of Chama. We had access to a cabin, with 55gal water, propane (at least 4 bottles) and firewood. We had to buy the license for $450 or so. Out of three of us, I got a 4x5, another guy got a 260 - 270 6x6 and the other went home without any shooting opportunity. We saw elk, not alot, but some. Tough conditions with all the rain, lightening, hail, and water everywhere.

I think your expectations are right on with your price expectations. It was a 6 day hunt that we paid for.

I am two for two, my first 2 elk both time, archery, got tags for $600 plus license ($475 then $750 now) one of the highest densities of elk in the state.

Look around, the price you listed can get you into great areas.

thanks guys, just wanted to get this on top to get a few more responses, Brad

FYI tags sell FAST, most reasonably priced tags are long gone, and there is a wide range of tags, I have seen $2,000 to $500 for the exact same tag.
