What exactly is a C.W.M.U.?

Is it just a regular public land unit you can hunt in like here in Arizona or New Mexico or California, or is it a private ranch that allows hunters in who draw special tags or what? I know what the acronym stands for, but I was watching the Never Enough DVD and he kept saying it like it was special or something. The areas looked more like National Forest than cattle ranches to me but I have never had the misfortune of getting lost and ending up in Utah so I am kind of wondering about it. Thank you

cwmu is a private property or ranch. when the program first started it was called P.H.U. not is is called C.W.M.U. the land owner allowes public hunters to hunt the land but you only get 3-5 days on an average. some will give you more.. but that is about it.. the hunting is sometimes better but not always. some landowners are really nice to deal with others are real ass's do lots of calling and asking before putting in for a cwmu

Thanks a ton for the clarification. I have a feeling that with SFW invading here that there may be a push for that sort of thing here in the near future.

Just a little FYI about the CWMU program in Utah and SFW--they are not nor have they ever been very supportive. They tried to kill the program several years ago. If SFW AZ is pushing it it is because their local members have something to bennifit from it or have a personal interest in it.

I did not mean that SFW AZ is pushing anything. I just figured if they (SFW) are coming here I should get familiar with how things work where they started. Thanks again guys for all the info and the link looks very informative. I know that hunt on Never Enough looked just as good as any bull elk hunt I have ever been on here in AZ and I have been on a quite a few of them.

LAST EDITED ON Jul-14-05 AT 08:55AM (MST)[p]Just a little more information. Most CWMUs consist of 7,500+ acres (there are certain exceptions). Many of the CWMUs in Utah provide a large amount of transitional and winter ranges to big game from both private and public lands. The CWMU program has allowed many ranches to stay intact and not be sub-divided (through hunting monies). Only Utah residents are allowed to draw the public tags which take place on the CWMUs.

I would venture a guess and say that there are ranches in Arizona which do not allow the pubilic to hunt them. There are also ranches which are being bought and Sub-divided, thus loosing critical ranges. IF Arizona had a CWMU program, then they might save a few ranches and the public might draw tags to hunt ranches now closed. The CWMU program isn't a "Save All", but it does a lot of good. (And of course there are bad ones, just like everything else in life)
