4A Youth Cow Elk Hunt (Az)

blacknight, me and my dad used to hunt that area. what are the dates of your hunt. i will tell you one thing "scout" find where the elk are usually allover or at least they were. if it's dry concentrate on water. once you find the elk they usually will stay in that general area unless spooked real bad

hey i just found out that my uncle and two cousin who live in winslow az were drawn for the nov cow hunt. my uncle was also drawn for unit 4 turkey, deer and antelope.

Cow in 4A? Well.....they're pretty much all over the place in that unit. I was there this weekend & saw one herd of 50 cows right on the 300 road up high. I don't think you're gonna have much trouble getting into them no matter where you go.

4A has a lot of elk. Hunt the 169 road, the 180 loop road..Pretty much can't go wrong anywhere in 4A. The 180 loop road follows the edge of Chevlon Canyon.

Good luck!

Thanks for the info guys but Im gonna have to get a map of that area because I dont know where this 300 road is or the loop 180. I am shooting in the dark as of right now and the more info where to camp or to start is what I need. I heard somewhere around knoll lake was good but I havnt been there. Thanks AZtrophyhunter and 270 winchester for your help. If theres info you guys need on a certain unit other than 4a let me know.

The 169 road forks off the main 300 rim road that goes past Woods Canyon Lake. You can't miss it. This should be a pretty easy hunt, there are a lot of elk up there.

Have fun and good luck!

John

what map best describes this unit or forest map. I need to pick one up and look for these roads you all have mentioned.

Just pick up a good forest service map. It will have all of the FS roads mapped out and it's easier to read than a topo. By the way, My son drew his first Cow tag in 4A this year also! This should be a cakewalk...I hope! I shot my cow last year in 4B during the muzz season.

Keep the tips coming boys! I'm scouting also, but every little bit helps!

Goodluck to you and your son, Blackknight!

Blacknight, listen to Carl (cpugsie). He's top notch! He hooked me up with some broadheads he designed for my hog hunt this past spring...for free! I can't thank him enough for his advice!

Hey, guys like Carl are hard to come by. I do appreciate all the feedback. Im also wanting to know if there are any hunters out there that had a successful hunt last year in 4a for the youth hunt?

I Have spent a lot of time in 4A, I live just West of Winslow.
Trust me , don't be afraid to hunt where the Antelope call home, there a lot of elk in the open flats just below the cedars. Do alot of glassing in the mornings and evenings.

Best of Luck, Kim

I dont know where the antelope roam? I guess I have to get a map and see where are these cedars you speak of. Thanks again any more detailed info will be appreciated!

BlackKnight, The antelope are where I told you to go in the PM I sent you! Look for the land mark I told you about and get up there. You can see the world from there!! There is also a resident herd out there and somewhat easy to find. Good luck to your son!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carl

hey BS, you say that your near Winslow, right? just wondering if you ever seen anything above the I-40. Reason i asked is i got one of them limited hunts and it restricts me to 5a and 4b, north of I-40. I know, i know. I just wanted a tag and threw in for the first thing i saw that was left over as far as tags go. I kinda screwed my self there. but any info would be helpful, from any one.
much thanks.

Blacknight, JohnSWA and cpugsie are right, I have seen a herd as big as over 100 head just a few years ago. There have been several times in the last few years someone from town has drawn a cow tag and could'nt find the elk, so I went out with them and we have always found elk in the low country.

NeedaNu4x, I haven't spent any time over in the immediate area of those limited opportunity tags, the elk they are trying to control with that hunt are mostly located East, and Northeast of Winslow along the Little Colorado River, I do know that a few weeks ago My wife and a friend were going to Winslow to do some shopping and they told me they had seen 3 elk about 5 to 7 miles East of Winslow in a sand and gravel pit, but I believe for the most part they stay closer to the river.

Hope this helps and Best Of Luck To All

Sorry, In my first post I said I live West of Winslow, but what Iraelly meant to say was EAST of Winslow.

I gotcha Carl!!! My youth is curious if there has been anyone there last year with a success story in 4a cow elk hunt. He like to read too...

Thanks for the info BS hunter. I'll look into it in the weekends to come. My hunt isnt until the oct/nov (archery).
Thanks again!

Mike

In my humble opinion, the best elk hunting in unit 4a is all around Bear Canyon Lake.

HappyHunting I agree I had the youth tag in 2003 and I got my bull out of the Bear Canyon Lake area and also had a bear come into the area I was watching on 3 occasions. That is a good tag and a good luck. Best of luck to those who drew it.

hey BS do you maybe live in the town of joseph city. i used to live there when i was really young.

Hello 270, As a matter of fact, Ido live in Joseph City. I just looked at your Profile, and the last name Helms rings a bell, but I can't place you in my mind.

Kim

oh wow it's a small world isn't it. hey how is that little town? and your name doesn't ring a bell. my dad is Ron Helms he used to work at the power plant there.

270, Yeah, now I know who your dad is, he worked for Pheonix Cement, out at the plant. I work at the plant, but I don't know if your dad will remember me or not, I used to wave to him all of the time, but never got to talk to him much. Well the Town is growing, and doing pretty good. My youngest daughter just told me she went to school with your sister. So how is your dad doing? Yes it is a very small world.

Hope You Guys Got Some Tags This Year,
Kim

BS my dad is great and now that i think of it i remember who your daughter is. unfortunetly i was the only one who drew a tag this year. at least it is a valle vidal tag. how did you do in the draw this year?

Well We got SKUNKED all the way around, so I guess we are going to break out the sticks and strings, in fact we are going to head out Thursday afternoon, and se if we can find either a bear or a deer to scare with an arrow or two. Good Luck on Your Elk Hunt, and be sure and post some pics when you get back.

Well guys the hunt is next week? Any last minute campers out there that have seen some recent sight? Cow elk that is??? I still have all the useful info from the past good ol boys but just wanted to repost message for any new info? I guess we will be at the happy jack lodge on thurs 4-6pm for the big pow wow as well.

Hey Knight, it seems like you're worried about this way to much. Several people have given you good advice....just take heed & you'll be fine! Drive down any road in 4A & I almost guarantee you're gonna find a cow somewhere along the way.

Well I guess I might as well join in too. I grew up in good ole Joseph City. My folks still live there and my step dad works at Phoenix Cement, now Salt River Materials Group.

BShunter, I don't suppose you are related to Kimball Shelley? He was a great guy and a young mens leader of mine growing up.

Hey COLO3D, It just so happens that I am his oldest son, your name sure rings a bell but I just can't put it to a face. It seems like it has been quite a few years since I last heard your name around here, did you graduate from Joseph City and if so what year? It is good to hear a Joseph City name pop up on here once in awhile.
Best of Luck, Kim

It's good to hear that the legend of all of the bad things that I did while growing up is starting to die down. I graduated form JCHS in 1991, barely.

COLO3D Who are your parents? Are you related to Faye Henrie, used to be Faye Brazil or some thing like that? I was talking to my hunting buddy this morning, and he was pretty sure he remembered you, I think I am kind of starting to remember you but just can't remember your face.

My step dad is Bevan Henrie. I live in Littleton, CO. I have been here for about eleven years now after living in Salt Lake for three years right after high school.

COLO3D, I know your stepdad pretty well, your step brother Ryan Henrie works for me @ APS. I also know 270win. brother Brandon. My hunting buddy is Randy Baird, I thought for sure everybody around here knew about Randy and I, we've been running around together for almost 25 years now, and I think almost everybody from Winslow to Snowflake has heard of us.

Best of Luck, Kim
