LAST EDITED ON Jul-19-05 AT 11:48PM (MST)[p]Drew a late tag for unit 9. I'm lookin' for any info on migration patterns if anyone is familiar with them in this unit. **by the way, all together, my family and myself drew for a total of 11 animals this year, (5 elk + 6 deer) =) *all in the same household* thank you jesus ! ...time to buy another deep freezer...

But seriously any help in unit 9 in the december time frame.. I know there are some people out there who know where to start.

The hunt unit info for unit 9 on the G&F web site is pretty good at spelling out the wintering areas.

In the December hunts the elk are usually spread from one end of the unit to the other. The nothern part is mostly big pines which drops into oaks then PJ flats as you go south and east.
Most of the unit is thickly forested with only a few areas that can be glassed well. A lot of the cow hunters road hunt and kill alot of elk. Most of the cow hunts run about 50% success.
We've killed elk walking, sitting small meadows, water and road-hunting.

There are hotels in Tusayan and Valle or camping throughout the unit.
The weather sometimes has winter storms or rain making the roads in the south into nearly impassable mudholes. We had 10" of snow when we left last year on the next to last day of the hunt but by the time we got to the highway there was only about 2-3".
We will be there again this year as we have 6 tags for the late cow hunt. I don't have a tag but get to be driver, cook, butcher etc. for our group.
These are freezer tags and we usually have a great time.
Good Luck.

Neb, is the area near the Anita station still hold elk during that time frame or one the east side of the road that leads to the grand canyon? I was under the impression that they migrate towards red butte and towards valle. I have seen some in ten x and anita station but didnt know if the snow pushed them elsewhere. This will be our first time hunting elk in 9 that late in the year. Where should we start???

We have not spent much time in the Anita Station area but I have friends who have killed a few on the east side of the unit. I don't think there is any real migration of elk in 9 until after the hunts are over and only if there is a lot of snow. We have killed elk in many parts of the west side of the Highway. Every area of the unit has elk year round if there is feed. There should be excellent feed available this year with the moisture we had in the spring.
Are you camping or moteling?
I don't think the elk distribution is much different from the early to the late hunts. We've hunted October, November and December hunts in the last few years, both bull and cow and not seen any real migration pattern.
Hope this helps.

Well I was planning on camping if it wasnt too rough as far as snow. If the snow comes pretty good I might stay in a room. Im gonna have to keep checking the weather as the hunt nears. I just want an area where my wife can get her first elk. She has been real patient with me in all my hunts and I found a girl who love to get out and hunt herself. So I do really appreciate all of your feedback.

Neb hope to see you up there. What will you be driving or camped? Ill be driving a dark grey silverado and maybe my tent trailer. If the snow is severe ill rent a room. Like I said before I dont know the area during that time as far as the road conditions and what not. I hope you fill all of your tags. All I want is my wife to harvest her first elk and if she does I have you guys to thank..!!!!

Did you send an email?
I drive a hunter green Toyota Tundra (made in Indiana) 4 door with lots of scratches on the sides.
I'm leaving today to scout Nevada 231 for my elk tag. I'll be back 8/16.
My 17 year old has a bull tag in the Nov. hunt so I'll be in 9 for that hunt.
