Hello Guys,
Just moved to Wash. and it looks to be the only elk hunt I will be goin on? I live in Cowlitz co. I have never hunted Roosevelt or blacktail but am full of enthusiasm to try to hunt them. I have a smokepole, bow, and rifle. If anybody is willing to help out a new neighbor. You may PM me if you would like. I have hunted Az., Id., Ut., and Wy. and am willing to share information.
thanks

hey BBB
what part of Cowlitz
i live by cougar.
usually hunt around Helens or Marble mtn but recently have been packin into Goat Rocks.

I live in Kalama. I have been scouting for bears recently and have a hard time finding open land. I would love to talk to you sometime about the general area and potential for big-game opportunity here.

A lot of the land near Kalama is Weyerhaeuser which is open for hunting but much of it is gated. I would suggest doing some scouting either in the Cougar area, or around Naselle, which is out highway 4 towards the coast. Being in Kalama you're in an ideal location...you won't have to go very far to find elk.

For Western Washington, unless you draw a tag, bow hunting is the only way to go and that is coming from a rifle hunter (my opinion of course). I help my friend bow hunt and he helps me rifle hunt and his success rate is much higher and I have to admit that the bow hunts I go on are way more exciting. If you know how to call them and are willing to hike the best thing to do is to find a spot in the Coweeman--big country with lots of elk. We spend our time around the southern part of the unit behind locked gates (locked up to keep motorized vehicles out). It is a lot of hiking but a good mountain bike will help with that especially when you have a 70 lb back quarter on your back.

I have walked into some of the Weyerhauser gates and finally found a couple of clear cuts. I will do some major scouting next month while I'm looking for my first bear. Any pics of some critters from the area to help get me goin'? Any hunters in the area that are looking for a hunting partner. I'm an experienced hunter, just a new area. thanks for the info.

Sent you an e-mail with some info. I own property up the Kalama and know the area fairly well.
