Colorado Mule Deer?

I know that the Colorado application date has came and gone, but there should be left over deer tags. Which unit that usually have L.O.T. available would be a good place for me and my 2 boys (12-14yrs.) to have a good chance to harvest their first buck? No honey holes, just some oppinions! I'm new to Colorado, (just moved to Craig a while ago), so I thought this forum would be a good place to ask around.
Thanks for any help!

Which ever one I can get a L.O.T. for. Really I'm looking for advice for which season and areas.

Maybe its different for a resident but I thought ALL deer except archery went to draw about 5-6 years ago, when their herds started improving.

Get a copy of this years big game book (proclamation) and take a look at last years draws. Theres quite a few gmu's that had leftover tags. Next option is looking for a outfitter that has,nt booked up yet and you could get either landowner tags or privateland only tags. Theres always leftover PLO tags, it's finding the private land to use them on. Landowner vouchers are usually kinda pricey, but if you can find a place that does a tresspass fee type deal you could get some plo's and not be outa pocket too bad. And theres always those dredfull over the counter Bull Tags...... If you can find a place of your own out there on public land it might not be a bad way to go, atleast you'll get some huntin in with the boy's. Thats what its all about anyways. Whatever you decide you must first decide where you wanna go. Theres some good huntin around Craig, I'm not to familiar with the public land around there though. Hopefully someone else will chime in here and give ya a hand on that part of your question. Hope this helped, Ryan

Coloradoboy,

I believe I said Left Over Tags (L.O.T.) for mule deer. Is there or is there not left over tags after the draw???

Yup,

There should be leftover tags that were not allocatd after the draw. You'll have to wait and see where they are. Usually are a few up near Craig.

Thanks Bean! I hoping there are still a few good areas to try for. Any suggestions?

Take a look at the Colorado Big Game Brochure from this year.

Look at the deer section. The number on the left is the unit number. On the right is the hunt code. Just to the left of the hunt code is the Permitted Bag. It will say something like Buck, Doe, Either Sex. If there is a "*" to the right of that word, then there were leftover tags in that hunt last year after all of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th choices were drawn. Those are the hunts you will want to research.

Thanks Droptine!! That's what I thought. I'm in the process now of trying to make the right choices. Any advice is great.
