elk too close: tell me stories

I thought it would be entertaining to hear some stories about elk that got a little to close for comfort. Also, has anyone ever been stuck by one? My morbid curiousity at work. I heard about one guy who was bow-hunting deer and arrowed one. Waited a bit and walked to the downed buck. Knelt down to start to clean him and he rolled over and jumped up. The broadhead was sticking out on the other side and it stuck in the guys thigh ( with the deer on the other end of the arrow). Ouch! Almost bled to death. Just a story I heard, not sure if it was on here or where, but I keep thinking about that one. Come on, tell me a story....

I once was bowhunting for deer and had a raghorn bull walk within 4-5 feet from me. He was close enough, I could see his eye lashes. I was crouched down next to a quakie and he had no idea I was there. When he went to step closer, I waved my hand and he bailed. It was pretty neat.

About ten years ago my buddy and I were scouting for an elk hunt, and we spotted a bunch of cows and calves about 150 yards below us, so we thought we would practice our stalking skills, any way we got to within about 15 yards of some of them, and we were behind a small cedar bush when my buddy decided he was going to try and crawl a little closer, so he got down on his belly and crawled a few yards closer, about that time a cow fed out from behind a cedar tree and fed straight towards him. When she got within a couple of feet of him she turned an fed around another cedar bush, just about the time he thought he might start to crawl out she came back around the bush and fed back past him towards some of the other elk. Finally he was able to crawl back out and we snuck out. the elk never saw us untill they heard us fire up our 4wheelers. My buddy said that when the cow was that close, he was afraid to move cause she might startle and start stomping him with her hooves.

Best of Luck, Kim

I shot a good sized 5x6 one year with a black powder gun at about 12 yards away. He went down immediately, layed there and started kicking, finally jumped up out of control and ran right at me. I stepped behind a tree or he would have ran over me, instead he went past about 2 ft away, ran head on into a tree and crashed again. Layed there awhile and Im trying to reload in a frantic state and he gets up again and runs off once more. I got reloaded and ran towards where he'd headed and I shot him again to finish him 75 yards away. Gary

I was elk hunting a few years back, hiking about halfway up a mountain, with my brother walking the ridge on top. I stopped to take a leak, and I heard hooves hitting the ground behind me. When I looked behind me, a deer fawn was running down the moutain straight towards me (I guess my brother spooked her). When she got just a few feet away, she suddenly saw me and put on the breaks, legs spread wide. She looked at me for a couple of seconds and bounded away. I laugh every time I think about it.

Over the years I have had many close encounters while archery elk hunting, I have had clients drop their bows and take off running scared to death, once while it was raining me and a client had backed against a rock overhang along a ridge to get out of the rain for a bit when we heard a bugle from a bull and then a answer from another bull at our backs and all of a sudden a herd of elk were airborn over the top uf us about 3 feet as they were going downhill and jumping from the ridge to the ground in front of us, That was cool. I have bugled in satelite bulls that were close enough to touch and clients have had to go back to camp and change their drawers, have been on the move closing in on elk and had my son stopped next to a trail and a 2 pt bull came trotting by him within a foot of him, He now makes sure he stops next to a big tree, Some funny stuff for sure thanks for the post and remembering some of the memories of hunts past.

I've had two that bewildered me.
My first experience I was about 5-6 and I was on monroe on an archery deer hunt. Me / my dad / Our buddies Lance and his brother Tyler, and my Uncle Jeff were all out hunting. My dad had bagged his buck the day before and we decided to help get the others a buck. We paired up with tyler and ended up splitting up sometime after 3-4pm. So my dad decided he wanted to play with the rutting elk... We had seen a few bulls wollering down the valley about 500 yards away and quite a few cows. You could hear the herd bull in the quakes about 50-75 yards away from the cows in the valley. We ducked down into a grove of quakes and my dad began to throat call. After about 20 minutes a 6x6 came walking in. Covered completely in mud, with shrubs hanging from his horns and pretty beat up from fighting. He ended up coming to within 10 ft and wrapping his horns around a 10ft tall quake, wripping it outa the ground and continuing to tear stuff up right infront of us.
My second encounter happened 3 years ago, again on monroe. It was about mid day and I had hiked about half way up the side of a hill into a quakie patch. My dad had decided he was gonna stay lower just outa sight. I'd say we were about 100 yards apart. Out of no where trees start smashing and immediately I look up. It took me about 2 seconds to realize it was coming from below me. By the time I swung around a calf elk was within grabbing distance of me blasting up the hill and over the ridge.

2 years ago with a guy calling behind me a 5 X 5 bull finally had enough of the teasing. The friend had been imitating the bull. He came charging down the mountain I was in the way. Needless to say before I had a chance to draw the bull was feet away. I had to move or get run over. When I did he applied the brakes then tore off spraying me with dirt / rocks.

Had an archery raghorn tag last year on the rez. First morning at first light I was cow calling and had a big 6x6 come right up to me. He had his left eye gouged out and dripping blood from a fight. He finally smelled me and took off. I paced him at four steps.

Had several cows "bark" snot on me. Several bulls within touching distance (and still no shot) One brushed my clients bow when he spooked and knocked arrow of rest.
I have only ever had one bull )out of several hundred within 25 yards), that was gonna "git me". He was a very agressive herd bull I had hunted for weeks, King of the Mtn, if you will. One morning I just let him talk and snuck within about 50 yards before I cut loose with my "horny satalite bull" immitation. He closed the distance to about 12 yards within seconds. Thrashing a pine but facing me, so no shot. He started to get a little nervous when he didnt see another elk after a minute or so. When he turned to take his cows away, i made a couple grunts with my voice and drew, stepping out from behind a large juniper for a clear shot. I was thinking he would freeze in mid turn, offering me a nice broadside or quartering away. Instead he saw my movements and spun back twords me, head down and cocked, stiff legged and closing the distance fast. I was at full draw but had no shot (facing, antlers, head) I yelled when he was just about to make contact (few feet), stepping back as I yelled he spun and hightailed it, never stopping to offer me my shot. I wear tan when I call, its suprising the amount of movement you can get away with, in this case though it worked a little too good.
Shot an old Black Bear Boar (21 yrs old) with my bow one time at point blank on the ground in the head. (This was within a few seconds after my first shot at 15 yards connected, it was a good one) Dont think he was out to get me, I think I was just on his escape route and he wasnt sure where the first shot came from. Still have the skull, with the split where that zwicky tried to penetrate. Must admit I got the shakes for a while after that little episode!

Awesome stories! And now, I remember one from last year. I was bowhunting deer and came up out of the timber into a meadow. I didn't want to walk out into the open for long and spotted a stand of quakies to head for. As soon as I crouched down I spotted a cow. I was glassing her ( about 200 yards) when I see something move about 40 yards in front of me. I looked up and saw a tail pop out of the grass and then another. Then two little coyote pups' heads pop up. I'm thinking," this is pretty cool". They were pouncing on bugs or whatever. Then they just start trotting right towards me, noses to the ground. The wind was perfect. The one in the front just kept coming right at me. Finally, when it was about to run nose-first into the end of my arrow, I made a little sound. He popped his head up and stared me right in the eye for about 20 seconds (within arm's reach). Then jumped up , did a 180, and ran about ten yards and stopped. The other one never saw all this ( somehow) and continued to come around the trees, right up to my side. When he was 2 feet away, I said ,"what are you doing little dog?" Needless to say, he bailed. Ran to his sibling and stopped. then they just stood there and looked at me for a minute or two and then took off. That morning was a good one. Ah, nature! Keep the stories rolling, love 'em.

Wasn't me but my hunting buddy was asleep with a bit to much doe in heat on his bandana around his neck. A very nice 9 point came up wanting a little of him. When he woke up, he hip shot with a shotgun in the bottom of the chest. I wouldn't believe it if I hadn't see it for myself but the exit wound was out the top of the deers back.

on september 11 my dad and i called in a 350 bull. i thought the bull was going to go to my right but instead took a left and i was sitting behind a large tree. he kept coming and i wasnt drawn yet with my bow and came to 3 yards. the bull saw me shaking and i could see the snot run from his nose. the bull turned around and ran to 40 yards. i threw an arrow at him and hit him in the shoulder bone. the bull ran away. we searched for 2 days and never found him. during rifle season we saw the bull again at 70 yards but was in some brush and winded us. i saw the brusied and bloddy shoulder and was walking and running fine. hope to get him this year.

Okay here is one for the books. It was two years ago in a LE unit here in idaho. I had not drawn the tag but due to my obsession with big game i was out calling and photographing elk. It was late morning and i was doing a little cow calling. I was getting pretty intense with the estrus whine when i spot a big 5x6 coming at a dead run about 150 yards away. I stopped calling and just watched as the bull closed the distance to about 75 yards. All of a sudden i saw another bull to my left about 50 yards at a dead run straight at me. I stayed quiet and watched the two bulls as they caught each others eye at 50 yards and the fight was on. They instantly went at each other just 40 yards downhill from me and locked horns. Stunned and in awe i didn't even think to snap a few pics. I watched in amazement when suddenly the bigger of the two bulls gained some leverage on the smaller bull and started to push him my way. Before i even had time to react they were on top of me. I tried to stand up and run but it was too late. Last thing i remember was a huge impact on my left hip as i turned to run. I don't know how long it was before i came to, but i had a mouth full of dirt and several chipped teeth. It took me a few moments to regain my witts. When i finally did i realized i was face down several feet from where i assumed the elk had run over me. I wreaked of elk urine and i had several bumps and bruises. My ribs were severely bruised and i was extremely scraped up. My front teeth are still chipped and broken! But i have one hell of a story to explain.

Lesson learned: Don't think you can outrun an elk!

Cain't wait 'till this fall to have more experiences to relate:7

My father shot a little two point muley with his rifle on a really steep hillside about 20 years ago. To keep it from sliding down as he cleaned it out, he tied its head to a tree. He rolled it over, started cleaning, and had its balls almost all the way off when the dang thing started kicking and stood up. I guess he forgot to slit its throat (or didn't think he needed to). My dad jumped up and grabbed his .270 and finished the job. Luckily he had tied its head.
It would probably spark a little life back into me too, if somebody tried to cut off my balls after I was gone.
The buck actually had something wrong with it. It had puss pockets all over its insides (especially the liver and along the backbone).
My buddies dad broke the back of a 3 pt. muley with his last bullet. He had to hop on it back and finish it with his knife. My friend said that it wasn't real pretty to watch.

I know that nobody will believe these, but here goes.

While scouting for archery elk, I got in front of an elk herd, which I was hoping to see the herd bull. I ended up too far to my left, right in the middle of the path being used by several spikes. I just laid down and waited. Eventually, they were all around me, one of the spike's leg was literally inches from my head as I laid there. At that point, I was very scared because I knew either I had to give away my location or the bull would finally figure it out, and I was afraid the first step he would take would be right in the middle of my back. As it turned out, the bull spun and veered off to my left. It was a great experience.

The next year while guiding a hunt, a cow circled around me while I was calling to a bull. She came all the way up to me and sniffed my leg. Earlier, I had spilled a bottle of cow urine all over my leg.

I grew up in Norther Virginia but followed the urge to head west after high school. I eventually found myself attendeding law school at the University of Idaho. Having spent my youth chasing Old Dominion whitetails, I decided to try my hand at archery elk! I went and bought a bow (I was not new to archery), a Wayne Carlton reed call and headed to some old clear cuts. My practice with the elk call was literally limited to the hour's drive to my predetermined hunting spot. I parked the car and hiked to a likely looking spot, sat down on a stump and started calling. In less than a minute I had a 5pt and his two cows at under 20yds. I was so unprepared, I hadn't even nocked an arrow. The bull was screaming for all he was worth heading right for me. Each time he screamed--I swear the earth shook and my bones rattled. He got to within 10 or 12 feet. I remember being surprized at how much he smelled and how damned big he was (he was actually just an average 3 year old bull). After 30 seconds of being afraid to even blink, the bull thrashed a young pine tree and eventually wandered off leaving me exhilerated and dumbfounded at how easy this elk hunting was compared to my whitetails back east! Needless to say, I've been an "elkaddict" ever since. I've also learned how tough elk hunting and elk country can be. Although I've had similar close encounters with even bigger bulls since then, that moment will forever be one of my great hunting memories. You haven't lived until you've had an excited bull screaming at you from a few feet away looking for a fight!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-28-05 AT 10:18PM (MST)[p]10 YEARS AGO...... Hog hunt a ranch and tried a sneek closer to a big tusker(was ABOUT 300yrds away!) could only close to about 200 and no more!
The kids(guides)talk me into taking a shot(I had a 7mm mag)and so I did and it turns out I hit it in the left ham and it ran into the THICKEST $hit around so I thought o well time to go home I blow it!
and then one spoke now you have to go get it! huh............what do you mean? go get it!! I said.
He said it would be easy that him and his friend would beat the bush and push him to me so I could finish off the wounded 350lbs boar! so started after I went in and found a spot on a hog trail! a small clearing about 20ft circle! then I heard them yell he going straight to at you(just after thinking this is dumb!).. then I smell him just as I heard a grunt and sqwill(sp?).then I turn 180 and see him 6 feet in front of me and hes want to ruin my day in a very bad way! ALL I COULD DO WAS SAFTY OFF AN SQUEEZE THE TRIGGER WORK BOLT AND SQUEEZE TRIGGHER!.....
then the boys get there think I was the next bait pile and laughing because they said those were the two fastest shots they ever heard... and they shoot every day when home from collage!
The first shot hit the hog in the lower left jaw smashing it to mush and spun him a 360! The 2nd was a shoulder that exspired him and he dropped dead at my feet!!!!!
I only found one tusk and at the gum line was 4 3/4 inch long and very sharp! the gods truth! was a great rush.... after then at the ranch was 1st exposier to an MONSTER MULEY a 37" perfect 4x4 taken in the Paunsagunt in Utah.
I BEEN HOOKED EVERY SINCE!! even got to hunt it in 2000! drew with 1 point!(I saw one beast that was a true brute but was It would have been a hole shot so I walked.. I have a qustion for you guys..When I was on my two year waiting period for a premium deer unit draw, could have I apply for LE ELK HUNTS?

My dad shot a whitetail that went end over end down a hill only to charge uphill directly at my dad.
He also had some close calls with elk. One large cow just about ran in to him while I was watching.
He was hunting deer when he heard hooves on frozen ground. He decided to lay down and to his suprise not only were they elk but the lead cow just about stepped on him. Another hunter witnessed it and said it was the funniest thing that he had ever seen hunting.

Great post!

Excellent footage DDS. Way to get the heart pumping!
