I am trying to put together an archery elk trip in the San Juan national forest this year. I have never hunted this region and would appreciate any info.I would prefer to get away from the crowds if possible. Thanks in advance!

LAST EDITED ON Jul-26-05 AT 09:54PM (MST)[p]Just curious, where will you be coming from and what dates? I am also trying to work out a Colorado trip this year. I will be coming from Tucson, dates probably around 30th??

I would like to know what general area to start hunting with the least amount of pressure. I have never been to this area just heard about it from a friend. So any info would be very helpful. I would be pulling a travel trailer so would need to find a decent spot to camp. Also how is the elk population there?

I'm headed to Co. also . Will be leaving Tuscon on the 15 of Sept. Hunting unit 74. Lived in Durango for about 12 yrs. so know the area well. Send me a P.M. and I will tell you some good places to park a trailer andmaybe some likely spots to find an elk.

Hello Lifetime:
I live in Texas and will be hunting Unit 74 in a couple of weeks. Never been there before and will be hunting with friends who live near there. Would like to ask you questions about the area and likely conditions for that time of year. Let me know if you wouldn't mind "chewin' the fat" a bit. My email address is [email protected]. I've hunted Idaho for the last 5 years, so I have some experience but would like to hear more about Unit 74 from a third party. Thanks for your time.

What's up guys. I'll also be hunting 74 up around purgatory. I hunted the 2nd rifle season there last year, missed a nice 6 pt bull. I'll be headed out around the 30th/31st and I'm probably going to be alone cause my friends are flakes. I'm probably gonna camp down around relay creek or up in tin can.

I'm leaving 8/30, driving up so be there 8/31. Looks like we'll be in the same area if your going to relay creek, think tin can is futher north than we'll get. Just ordered maps of the area from Mytopo.com, helluva service. Would like to talk about this area with you.

ps
if you guys want an elk, just get up in the head of Cascade.

Hey Dutch! What's up? It looks like I'll be alone again this year, just like last when we met down by relay creek. This'll be my first archery elk hunt so hopefully I'll see more elk than I did last year.

Diehard-you have a message!

sounds like you and my brother have the same friends. They tell him all year they are going to come out with him then they never do.
Anyways, hopefully you see more elk, looking to be a great fall with some good rain all summer. Elk should be good and fat.
