I AM GOING ON A ELK HUNT NEAR THE CHAMA AREA AND WAS WONDERING WHAT THE WEATHER IS LIKE IN EARLY OCTOBER. I AM HUNTING OCT.6-10 AND WOULD LIKE TO KNOW WHAT I SHOULD PACK. I DON'T WANT TO OVER PACK SINCE I WILL BE FLYING, BUT I DON'T WANT TO COME UP SHORT EITHER.

Great chance at snow, possibly rain, typically not really cold - check weather the day before you leave to get a better idea.

We hunted early-mid September 2 years ago and it was rain rain and more rain. It was in the low 30's to High 20's in the AM and then warmed to the mid 60's to almost 70 when it was not raining. Most days it stayed in the 50's for the high. The area we were hunting they said is only available until the 1st or 2nd week of October when the snows close the ranch road to the back country. I don't remember the elevation be we were close to Tierra Amarilla.

Beautiful country.

Hunted 4 years earlier near Raton, in early October (4th or so) and it was cool in the mornings low 30's and then warmed up to the mid 70's and cooled down quickly when the sun set. The weather channel for Chama, NM says 32 for the low 65 for the high at that time of year on average.

I've been up in that area every weekend since drawing a tag. Hunted there last year in early October. Warm one day, four inches of snow the next. One word...."layers". I've been cold in July and warm in October. You never know in the mountains. It Will be cold at night and mornings, thats for sure. I usually pack some thin "tech" fabrics for under layers., a polarfleece zip up and and extra large camo long sleeve t-shirt to pull over all of it. You can save a bundle on camo clothing if you use this approach. good luck.
