I just bought my son a 300WSM for his elk hunt. I started with 180 grain Nosler Partition. Which would you choose for that caliber for elk?

Thanks,
Steve

LAST EDITED ON Aug-04-05 AT 08:33AM (MST)[p] BINGO, EXCELLANT CHOICE. THE 300WSM SHOOTS THAT 180 NOSLER VERY FLAT, YOU MIGHT BE REAL SURPRISED. IF YOU HAND LOAD GREAT, IF NOT TRY THE FEDERAL VITAL SHOCK/ ITS A HOT LOAD. I RELOADED FOR 26 YEARS, NOW I SHOOT THE VITAL SHOCK. THAT LOAD WILL HANDLE ALMOST ANY ANIMAL IN NO. AMERICA. I HAVE 7/7 ONE SHOT KILLS SINCE I BOUGHT MY TIKKA3 300 WSM/ SWEET/LIGHT/ SETUP. YD.

180 gr Nosler Partition is an excellent choice for elk. I shoot a 300 WSM in a classic featherweight. It has taken two 6X6 bulls with one shot('03 and '04). Neither bull went 20 yards. It is a proven bullet design and potent elk medicene. You did your son a good stroke. The only improvement would be to kill one so you could load it whole.

YD.
Thanks for the info. I did buy Federal Vital Shock as recommended by several different people. I am really looking forward to gettting out and sighting it in and getting my son to practice. That plus the scouting is going to be great.

Shortmag,
That is the same make and model I bought for my son. I am glad to hear that you have had big time success.
If we scout and practice shooting enough maybe we will be able to load one whole.
Thanks,
Steve

YD and Short Mag,

You guys were in the bullseye with your comments concerning 180 grain nosler partition for the 300 WSM. My son Dan, killed a 6x6 with one shot in the neck and piled him up. I was very impressed with the shot considering the bull was running and there was just a small window in the tall pines.

Short Mag, we did load the elk whole. We had plenty of help.

Thanks guys!
