I was up at my taxidermists yesterday picking up my bear hide and he said a 440 bull was killed out by hanford couple days ago out in the blackrock area. It was in velvet and may have had some trash. He said its sitting down at another taxidermist shops. There is AHE permit hunting going on out there right now plus im sure he paid big cause i know the land he shot it on and they charge like 3 grand to hunt elk. If I hear anything else I will pass it on.

Advanced Hunter Education- I have one also but I didnt put in for the unit cause its so hard to find property to hunt, everyting is pretty much private then they charge you 1500-3500 to hunt there property. They also have a general season out there for any elk but you gotta have the cash to play.
Were going camping this weekend but when we get back ill see if I can sneek down with my digital camera.

Im sure it's easier to find the bulls when they glow in the dark

I know that there are big bulls and the herd is getting to big and causing some trouble with the farmers. They should open up some special permit bull hunts for Hanford.

I know some people that fish the river by Hanford and they tell stories of some monster muleys they see.

The farmers wont let you hunt though unless you have the cash, I would gladly pay a tresspass fee out there but im not paying what they are charging. Unless your a family member or have the cash your out of luck. Maybe someday.

There is no permit for the Hanford Elk. Talked to a taxidermist friend of mine, and he states the bull was shot by one of the land owners, on his neighbors property, with a land owner tag. Here is the real kicker...this is the 3rd Bull over 350 that guy has shot since January 1.

All the land owners in that area cry that the Elk are causing to much crop damage, so they either want more landowner tags, or reimbersed for the damage. Since they won't let anybody hunt, what they're really saying is they want payed for their crops, and also to be able to hunt 365 days/yr.

Apparently the Bulls are the only elk doing crop damage, because they are not shooting cows. Go figure!!

Dsgfishn, there is an AHE hunt going on in the Blackrock A elk area from August 1st to march 2006 and they can shoot any elk,I meant hanford area, not on hanford itself. I hear ya on the landowners out there. they want to ##### and moan but dont let anybody hunt. Like i said, id pay a tresspass fee but im not paying the big money.

Ya it must be just the bulls causing the damage cause thats all they shoot. I know the guy who has property out there and they charge 3000 to hunt. I called to see if they would just let me shoot a cow and they never even called me back. They said the bull was shot off Martinezes land. Thats who I know out there.

Those guys out there could probably charge 10 grand for elk hunting and theyd get the rich in there to pay it.

I know the WDFW is getting tough and not paying landowners that want money for elk damage but they don't let hunters hunt the animals. To bad they are all charging big money.

Are the bulls antlers done growing by now?

If there not done there probably pretty close as its getting close to archery season.

There is a couple public areas but they are small & not really worth the time. Unless you can chase them off the reach. I think the WDFW is trying to work with the Hanford people to let hunters on. That would be a cool draw.

Get some pics please, opening Hanford up would be sweet, I don't know about the table fare from one of those critters though.

The Hanford Reach not only has Monster Elk and Monster Mule Deer. There are Monster Sturgeon!!! My Co-Worker's Best(God Rest his Soul) is 13' 2" and mine is right at 9'!!! Every State should have a Defunked Nuclear Plant!!! Good Luck

Are these elk free ranging? If so, do you guys have any info as to how I can buy a tag? Thanks Todd

Todd, I believe the tag is over the counter, then you have to secure permission to hunt private land the borders the Hanford site which is closed. That permission as stated above could be expensive and then the animals may decicde to stay on the site out of reach of hunters. hope that answers your quetion. Scott

Slider, your right there are plenty of big Sturgeon in the Upper Columbia. I Guide there in the Summer and Fall. It's also one of the best spots in the lower 48 to catch Alaska size Salmon in the Fall.

Todd, you could probly get a tag from a landowner, however it's like anywhere else, a tight knit group. The second problem is that this hunt isn't your typical Elk hunt. These are mostly traveling Elk that know exactly where the Hanford boundry is. Typically it's not a matter hunting them, but more a matter of hoping your there on a day the elk wonder off the Reservation. These elk will bounce from landowner to landowner as there hunted, with there ultimate goal getting back to the Res. without being killed. Martinez generally only lets 15 paying hunters on per year(of which, most are family and close friends), Merkel will not even let his own taxidermist hunt, and Linda will let you hunt for a price, however it is from her H2 Hummer, and she tells you which elk your allowed to shot.

Born again Bow Hunter this Sept. Any help on Montana 380 tag would sure help.

does not sound like much of a fun hunt! Is this were "Marvin" was filmed and studied? Montana unit 380 is a hot tag!

From the report from the director it looks like lots of land owners are killing big bulls. go to wdfw, what's new, report from the director for August 5th and read down. It lists the landowner, # of elk killed and size. What a crock.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-09-05 AT 03:48PM (MST)[p]Here it is, and it is a crock, that one guy has killed 4 bulls already, why cant they shoot the cows to. I like where they say the AHE people havent killed anything and having problems shooting the spikes then say wheat harvest is starting and time is limited for helping the hunters. Helping my A$$, there just waiting for the 3 grand for someone to shoot a big bull.

Elk Area 3721 Landowner Damage Access Permits Update: No elk harvested this week. The AHE hunters hunted both public and private lands in the Rattlesnake Hills without success. They are having a problem with getting shots with spike bulls. Landowners have started harvest on wheat and time is limited with regard to helping with the hunters. We should start having a better harvest in another week when antlerless permits will start for both 3721 & 3722.

Landowner damage access permits: 16 bulls harvested.
Bud Hamilton has harvested 2 bulls (1 spike and 1 small branched)
Neal Ice has harvested 2 bulls (1 small branched and 1 large branched)
Marshall Anderson harvested 4 bulls (2 small branched and 2 large branched)
Jan Blair harvested 4 bulls (1 small branched and 3 large branched)
Darwin Crosby harvested 2 bulls (1 spike and 1 small branched)
Janet Crawford harvested 2 bulls (1 small branched and 1 large branched)
Kill permits: 3 bulls harvested. Marshall Anderson 2 bulls, Jan Blair 1 bull

My theory is the landowners whined enough so the game dept. caved in and dont have to pay them damage money in return for the bull permits which the landowners are selling and making more money than they would recieve for damage money paybacks so its a win win situation for landowners and game dept. Game dept doesnt have to pay damage claims and they throw them a few bull damage permits to keep them quite.
