I have Maptech and have used it with my GPS to mark waypoints or locations I want to find when I hit a new area and it worked well.

I don't have map CD's for New Mexico or other states but wanted to know if you had tried the same thing by using the Long/Lat readings from the online software like this or terraserver and entered them as waypoints.

I tried this before and didn't have much luck but wanted to know if there was a way I was missing or if anybody else had figured this out.

Any help appreciated,

I don't know that it will put you dead on the mound but you should be in the ballpark the problem is on those airiels you can't zoom close enough to exactly pin point the spot if your a mile high and miss the spot by 1 foot then you are off several 100 feet but it should be fine for a general area

I go to topozone.com and look at the topo maps of a specific area. You can pinpoint an exact location(or pretty darn close) on the topo map and it will give you the lat/long coordinates and then you can enter this into your GPS. I have marked everything from a remote meadow I want to check out to saddles on ridges that I have located on the map. I have no problem walking directly to these locations. At most, I have been only a couple of hundred feet off, but no problem locating anything I have identified using the maps and transferring the data to my GPS.

I think my problem was the datum (sp?) between my gps and mapping software. Got those matching and they work great.

Just downloaded a piece of software called topofusion and it appears to have some great features.

I downloaded USA Photo and it works great as well.

Man there are some INCREDIBLE software packages out there. I have used mytopo and terraserver for years but adding this makes scounting a new area MUCH easier. Not that you still don't have to pound the ground but at least you go into it knowing what is there. Topofusion has a panning and 3D feature that is REALLY nice.

Everyone should download and try these.
