has anyone hunted out of a drop camp in the pecos wilderness, or can recomend an outfitter for one. Have a muzzleloader elk tag for 44/45

I passed this thread along to someone I know who has hunted there, unguided, paid outfitter to pack him in though - he was happy with the unit FYI.

Might want to look at PJ Diamond, I spoke with her a lot planning a hunt there (never drew) seemed very good. Just the fact she is a she and still around probably means she is doing on heck of a good job.

I know someone who may can help. He has guided for sheep and elk in the Pecos and elk in the Valle Vidal and Valles Caldera areas. He is as honest as they come. He actually went back to work as a DPS officer for the State of New Mexico and guiding as part time. He had to put family back first. I am headed back up to hunt with him for lion this winter. I have hunted with him before. He has all of his permits and took a dandy bull (330) with a muzzleloader in Valle Vidal himself last year. His name is Frank Casaus, 505-387-2018. He has put some guys on some pretty impressive bulls. Like I said he has some credibility being a Highway Patrolman. He has horses ,camp set up, the works from his guide service ( when he was guiding full time). Give hime a buzz.

Thanks alot for the info, I gave him a call and he was very helpful. Hope you get your lion.

Not a problem. I hope it will help you get on a bull. He had a good guide business going. He ran hunts down in old Mexico for sheep and Sonoran Mule deer. He has access to some of the best private ground left for lion. Encompasses close to 700,000 acres he has sole cat rights to. Lower country never think it would hold the lions it does. Still trying. Maybe this year will be the year. He just rsan to hard with the guide business it strained his family life. He can now work around his full time DPS job and cater to a couple of hunters per year. I think his target is 2 elk hunters and alion hunter per year. He pulled a Valles Caldera archery permit this year.

Good luck in the Pecos. Keep us posted on your hunt.

IMO, the elk hunting is better in the northern eastern part of the unit. Not much in the way of monster bulls, but you should have a good hunt with opportunities at 280-330 class bulls. Terrero Gen. stores takes hunters in from the south. I'd recommend finding someone who'll take you in from the north or east. I've heard of Frank C. but don't know much about his operation. I'd call JACO Outifitters out of Holman, NM.
