6-C new mexico first or second season

Got bow elk tags for 6-C in NM but can't decide whether to hunt the long 1st season with no moon or short 2nd season full moon but closer to rut ??? any advice ?

Depends on what you are after as far as type of elk.

Larger bulls will be easier early. You can also sit water in the early part of the season.

Later season - more rutting activity.

Do you have a land owner tag ?? Otherwise the dates have already been decided . I hunted 6c twice , the first year killed a little 5x5 w/ muzzleloader , it was the first week in Oct. but the bulls were screaming nutts , drew it again the following year and just couldn't ever get into range . Its a great unit though , if I had that tough decision to make I'd choose the second as your more likely to hunt more into the rutt....NMHUNTNUTT

A group of six of us had a tag in 6C last year and hunted the later part of August. We hunted the unit for five days, mostly spot and stalk because the elk weren't very vocal yet. We had two shot opportunities but no kills. I liked the unit and would think about going down again, but I would rather hunt bull elk nearer or in the rut. The one bull a friend of mine had a shot at was vocal early but not often. We did see a fair amount of elk but it was extremely warm and the elk hit the trees right after sunup. Good luck, fstop

Thanx guy's , we decided to hunt 2nd season but go a few days early to scout, also bought a cow elk decoy that we will try for the first time . FSTOP, did you hunt the fenceline of baca ?

No not too much. We basically found a canyon that seemed to funnel out of the Baca (Valles Caldera) into 6C. We hunted this canyon and a few others that were not to far from the border but no we didn't hunt the border itself. We didn't want the hassle of hitting a bull on the border and having to figure out how to get it out of the Valles Caldera had it died on the other side of the fence. The border is well marked. If you could show them a blood trail you might not have a problem? fstop

fstop, we aren't planning to hunt anywhere near the border, we've located what looks like a dense bedding area about a mile from the fence so we'll try to ambush them.
