scouting/pics during rut hunt

What do you folks think about the idea of someone(me) going out to my unit during the bowhunt (rut) and taking pics and shooting video. Keep in mind it is in a national forest. My hunt will be several weeks later. I really just want to check out the rut in full swing. Thanks.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-12-05 AT 04:56PM (MST)[p]As Long as you was not out trying to call in elk. I do not see a problem. But I would show some consideration to the other hunters by trying not to disturb them as much as possible.

I do alot of filming every year during the rut and i don't even take a call with me. Just sit back and let the elk do there thing. I don't see a problem in that.

Just my 2 cents.

thanks! I kinda figured that if I didn't call any it would be fine. Atleast I would be less disturbing than John Q Public. Of course I'd be camo'd up and walking quietly. I plan on going to a spot that doesn't really see very many hunters.

Take your calls with ya you might just run into a young hunter who needs some help, bonus would be if you get his hunt on tape.

I was thinking of asking an outfitter if I could tag along, just to tape one of his hunts. That may be stretching it a bit tho.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-15-05 AT 10:57AM (MST)[p]It would piss me off if a bull that i was working on was being stocked by another anti hunter, sent it running into the next county.
If your not hunting then keep your a$$ out of the woods or fields during that time.
or join up with some one who is hunting and film their hunt.
park you keaster out on the road a film from there.
I'm not being negitive about this,
I'm positive it's the wrong thing to do.

Last I heard...it's still a free county....

You have as much right to be out scouting for your up comming hunt as anyone else...even those that are currently holding a tag....

If it's on public land then he can pretty much do or go wherever he wants. If you don't like it then buy a landowners tag and hunt on private land.

I JUST HOPE HE WOULD HAVE A LITTLE COURTISY.
may some joy riders or hikers will walk thru his area while he's out hunting,
cross your fingers and we will all pray together.
I'm more concerned for his safety,
Best be in full orange, accidents do happen,

Ropinfool, give me a break,
how do you know hes not just trying to keep that big bull he knows is there from getting shot during muzz. or bow season.

YOU MEAN TO TELL ME I CAN'T GO INTO AN L.E. ELK UNIT THE LAST COUPLE OF DAYS OF THE ARCHERY HUNT WHICH IS A COUPLE OF DAYS BEFORE THE RIFLE HUNT AND CALL TROPHY BULLS IN AND PURPOSELY CAP ROUNDS OFF (JUST ABOVE THEIR HEADS OF COURSE) JUST BECAUSE IT MIGHT MAKE SOMEBODY MAD!!!

WELL SUM BEACH!!!

THE ONLY bobcat THINKING SOMEBODY SHOULD OF TOLD ME NOT TO BE DOING THIS YEARS AGO!!!

Jacka$$ster.001,

That comment of yours ranks right up their with......., ah hell I can't think of a dumber comment. This cat better just stay away from the woods Aug-Nov, unless that is I have a tag!!!!!

Your comment went from, and I quote "If your not hunting then keep your a$$ out of the woods or fields during that time" To a later post "I JUST HOPE HE WOULD HAVE A LITTLE COURTISY"

The only bobcat waiting for the next brilliant post!!!!!!

LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-05 AT 05:18AM (MST)[p]So whats your point.
Mine is, stay out of the woods......

don't spoil someones hunt for your own joy ride.
If you still don't understand it (Stay home..)
peta, peta, peta, peta,
thats just the thing PETA does,
oh we were just trying to film some elk!
we didn't know it was a season!
We didn't see the guy with the gun over there,
I was just trying to scout out the elk i want to shoot.

Don't give me any crap stay out of the woods...
jim

I know outtabreath and he is just excited about his hunt and going there during the rut to locate a good bull to hunt later is a good plan, plain and simple. I know if I were hiring a guide (for example) I would be pissed if he was not out there looking for elk before my hunt, and the rut is obviously the best time to do this.

I am sure he would avoid all hunters and do his best not to disturb there hunt.

Heck if I had a vehicle during my first bowhunt when I tagged out early I would have hit valle vidal just to see some big bulls rutting, chasing sattelite bulls & bugling etc.

I'll be out in the woods in unit 61 Colorado during the archery hunt. I'll be hunting grouse, wild turkey, and photgraphs. I'll be respectful, I expect the other hunters will be respectful of my hunting and filming rights too.

I KNOW GUYS, elkmaster101 what a jerk!
I just like to excite people.
There nothing more exciting than to be
in the field when the bulls are screaming,
I'm headed out on the first, Bow hunting.
Good luck and happy hunting to all.

Like I said, if you are on public land then too bad. Who are you to tell anybody else what they can do. If I want to cut wood, call elk, ride my horses/4 wheeler, target practice, or have a picnic with my family, you can't do a damn thing about it.

rOPiNFOOL,
your so right,
God knows I'm such a jerk,
Thanks for setting Me straight.
When I'm wrong, I'm really wrong.
in Colorado
read your sec. under Its against the law to:
page 7, #17

If your lucky you'll just get off with a fine.

Ok, let me set one thing straight. Peta wouldn't let me within a mile of their headquarters, wherever the hell it is. I am not planning on ruining anyone's hunting opportunities. I wasn't even planning on going to the area where I know there are bulls. I'm saving that for my hunt. Also, it is a NATIONAL FOREST! Now, what should I do about Grouse season, which happens to coincide with the elk bow-hunt? I'm sure that "entirely legal" activity won't upset anyone. I'll just take a shotgun and a camera and see which one I get to use first. Maybe I'll blast a few rounds off over the bull I plan to kill, just to keep him on his toes during bow and muzzy seasons. that was a great idea Bobcatbess. Always full of quality ideas. Maybe I'll shoot a four-wheeler too. I mean... give one a "tune-up".
now i'm getting sarcastic, Better go.
Thanks for the support DonV.

outtabreath,
Get out and enjoy as often as you can!!
Exactly correct: in my state bear season, grouse season, archery deer, archery elk, muzzle elk & deer, dove season, all over lap something!
So if some bird hunter heads up the same trail as me during muzzle elk season, we have to share the public access and resources. thats just life.

outtabreath,
no problem,
I wish i had the time to get out and scout,
and do a little small game hunting.
good luck.
hopping the weather changes soon.
need a good cold snap.
question, what has the temp. been at night say around 10,500
in northern colorado?

I'm not sure about northern Colorado. And I haven't been able to scout for two weekends. Last time I was up at that elevation there was still a few snow drifts here and there. I'm in New Mexico though. I would guess nightime temps at around 40 degrees. It was colder in late June/ early July. We have had a cool- down lately. Fall is on its way! And we all know what that means.

I live in Ariz. Last year about this time, I was driving to my archery turkey spot on opening morning, Some guys glassing elk
for the upcoming Early Bull season were parked right on the edge of the rd spotting some big bulls that I had been seeing for weeks. unfortunately my turkey spot was past the bulls. I drove by, they gave me a really dirty look and I am sure cussed me as the bulls all ran off. But Hey! I had a valid archery turkey tag my season was open, any way they were from out of state. They couldnt have known this was my little private paradise.
Didnt get a turkey but saw some.

I KNOW I PRBABLY WOULD HAVE WINED THE LOUDEST.
I'm one of those no good flat landers that thinks i know every thing.
are you hunting turkey this year?
what spicies of bird do you have there?

Merriams Turkey ,
I may hunt Turkeys but I doubt it I actually have an Archery Bull tag, that I am spending all my time on scouting , Archery deer/turkey both start Aug 26 - probably have some turkey hunter scare off my bulls , Karma being what it is and all ; )
