LAST EDITED ON Aug-16-05 AT 09:38AM (MST)[p]There are elk up there!!!! and this year if you got a deer tag on 12a you can buy a any elk tag at game and fish over the counter.

Save Your money,Az G&F has put out DOUBLE the tags in the 1st hunt and more on the Late hunt than in 2004,and now want to sell Elk tags. It's all about the $$$ !!! Only tougher hunt on the KAIBAB,a $ 900.00 "Buff" hunt --- maybe in 2006 THEY will offer a "Sasquatch" hunt ---

12A has a couple 400 bulls, odds of getting drawn are higher than other trophy areas I recommend every non-resident to this unit.

In Mangum Camp on road 252. Go almost all the way just before that big dip in the road. Right in there in the acorn area is where he has seen em. Big ones I might add.

You are NOT seriously considering buying an elk or buffalo tag are you?

Just check with G&F to see how many of these critters have been taken in the past on regularly scheduled "hunts."

Its a joke.

I'be been hunting on the Kaibab since the 70's, guiding up there since the 80's and have seen three elk! They were all bulls, saw 'em while on a spring turkey hunt. So yes, there is a few there--very few-- sure not enough to warrant buyng a tag for. Now if they made the elk tags $11 like a lion tag (which you'll never use either) then fine, I'd make that donation.

But $181 for a buffalo for residents and $838 for NR's is crazy.

We used to hunt buffalo up there before G&F got into the guiding business this year under the guise of population management hunts, and were very successful on hunts on the eastside. Never saw or killed a buff on the west, however.

Bottom line, if you want to make a cash donation to G&F, that's fine, but don't waste your time buying/looking for elk or buffalo. You have a pretty good deer tag, and 10 days to hunt.

Concentrate on finding youself something besides a fat forkie and have a good time!

You want to hunt for elk, apply in units south of the Big Ditch!

i here you but it seems almost impossible to get a bull tag these days...i'll be kicking myself if i go up there without an elk tag and end up seeing something nice...i guess that's hunting though...i think your right as for as focusing on the hunt at hand as the kaibab is almost impossible to get drawn for in itself...thank for the advice and feedback fellas

Don, save your breath. If they want a tag, let em after it. Duwane, Bruce now you have all said there is hardly any elk worth going after especially for the price but who knows, maybe they will have a 400" bull standing in the road......NOT.......guys, listen to these outfitters who have put alot of time up there, it is a joke to buy the tag unless the money amount is somewhat inconsequential. To pay more than about 150.00 non-res is about all AZGFD should charge or better yet, pay a bounty to anyone who kills one. It would save us taxpayers and the AZGFD/US forest service money to pay a bounty............ Thanks, Allen Taylor......

If it's the Department's objective to eliminate elk &/or buffalo from the Kaibab, why not simply issue a tag for both to all successful applicants in those areas? That way targets of opportunity could be legally taken by every tag carrying hunter in the units and the goal of elimination-at least for that hunt period- would be met.

LAST EDITED ON Aug-19-05 AT 01:59AM (MST)[p]AZBuckSnort I assume it's because the AZGFD wants to make money on every animal harvested. Instead of issuing a tag for elk/buffalo they should just let you use the deer tag on them. The deer tag is $24.50 and elk is $83.00. If you shoot an elk up there when you check the elk out pay the extra 58.50 and then money is not an issue. Same thing could be done with buffalo with whatever they think a buffalo is worth. Also this way your tag could only be used on one animal so if you harvested one of the three your hunt is over. If you harvested a elk/buffalo your success would not go under deer but just as one less hunter for deer and they could make up there own success for elk/buffalo if any are harvested. The way they have it now the people with the elk/buffalo tags will see nothing and the majority without the tags will see a few of either. I don't know what there trying to do with that idea?
