85/851 CO Rifle para elkies

Okay boys, I pulled a rifle tag for this area. Hunting private ground. What kinda elk can I expect? Anybody got any pics? Come on get my blood running! This will be my hunt for the year. I have hunted areas around Raton, NM but never CO. What kinda terrain is up there? Yes, I am hunting with an outfitter. One of those "Banquet fundraiser- auction had my beer goggles on when I bought it" hunts.

dont' know what ranch you are headin for but there are several well known elk hunting ranches nearby such as Forbes, Hill Ranch, Vermejo Park (NM). Should be lots of elk, if not they are doing something wrong or don't have enough land. depending on what you paid, might expect 290 - 310 class 6x6's.

I'll throw in the Tercio ranch too. Yep you shouldnt have any problems seeing numbers of elk, so keep your finger off the trigger! I saw a 320 bull on the Tercio during my cow hunt on the Tercio last Febuary.
What season are you hunting?
Lots of Oak brush, ponderosa pine. Great looking country. Dont be suprised to see some turkey and maybe a bear.

Not sure of the ranch we will be on. I will be hunting the first rifle season Oct 15-19th. I may call the outfitter and see if I should buy a "bar" tag. Are they available over the counter? They should be in season for the first rifle season wouldnt you think? Should be a fun hunt anyway. I stopped by the outfitter's house on the way to WA last November. He had some pics on digital cam of two bulls that come off that place. I would have been happy with either.\he said a lady made a bad shot on about a 330 bull they never could find him. I will see if I can get the ranch name. I have hunted elk, muleys, and lion up near Raton on the T.O. Looking for an oppurtunity for a descent elk if I can get that for what I have in the hunt I will be satisfied.
BTW that dang proclomation for CO is a pain in the rearend to navigate through for the drawings for a NR. Needed a team of laywers. I guess I done okay I got the tag in my pocket.
