LAST EDITED ON Aug-21-05 AT 09:26AM (MST)[p]I drew an elk tag and deer tag for for unit 11. I was thinking I would do the elk thing first. Are the elk still pretty rutty during the 1st part of the season. I am not taking horses, but have no problem walking and packing. I am going up scouting sept 7. Has anybody hunted deer or elk in the last couple of years in this area. I would love to hear what kind of animals were seen and taken, Thank you.

I drew that elk tag a few years back. There are some huge bulls and bucks in that unit as it is all permit only hunting for mulies and bulls. I scouted it early as well and called in and saw some really nice bulls. 330-350 and a 380 was killed not to long ago. The problem is that there is a fair amount of access to the unit and the Nez Perce Reservation is close by. the Natives do not have to draw and can hunt when ever they want. They do a lot of killing in there prior to the season. After the season started we saw one branch antlered bull and my wife didn't get a shot at it. We did find a 330 bull dead in a creek about 1/2 mile off the road with a bullet hole in its neck and in the guts..... I killed a spike on the last day with 36" horns. He was in a group of 65 and there were no branch bulls in the group.... I killed him way down in a hole off wapshile ridge on the salmon river side. I got permission on some privet property near the town of Keuterville, I had seen a monster on it early, but the elk moved out after the guns started... The deer tag; If it is the late season could be a real dandy tag if you get down in the breaks country. I maet a guy on the last day (Early tag) packing out a buck that he said was he last coice out of about 10 he had scouted... It scored about 185! He said he the biggest one he was after should have been about 200!! This guy had been in the woods for a good chunk of the season well off the beaten path. he had hiked several hours to get to where I shot the bull and it took me 3 hours to get to the road with horses and the bull... All I can say is that there are big bulls and bucks in the unit, and the elk tend to be in pockets and move around a lot. You will hear some unbelavable volleys of gun fire as somebody or a group of sombodies catches a bull crossing an open canyon.. I have never put in for the tag agian.

Seems like a 360 bull or two gets tipped over in there every year. I would look in China Ck and the top of Cottonwood Ck. I saw two bucks in China Ck a month ago that if I had a permit I would want to find this fall. Didnt get long looks at them but both had great frames. Other than that, spring bear is right.
