Heading out to MT tomorrow to hunt w/ a friend from Missoula. He just returned yesterday from 15 days of fire-monitoring in the Frank Church. Said the bulls haven't really fired-up yet vocally, but he did see a few matures with cows. On his drive back to Missoula yesterday, saw a few guys with elk in trucks, so some are getting 'em. Near his home NE of Missoula, his wife tells me the resident herd has been doing some bugling just after sundown and just before daybreak. I think that a little drop in temp next week along with some showers (they're calling for 4-5 days of showers near Deer Lodge, where we'll be) might just be the ticket to turn 'em on full force. Just hope the cloud cover keeps the full moon dim. Good luck, shoot straigt, & hopefully we'll have some nice pics & stories to share here.
