Advice on Montana Elk Hunt

As my handle suggest Im from east MT, but I need advice with elk. Here's the scenario: My hunting partner (brother) and I didnt draw any tags, so we are going to hunt with general elk tags. The only time we both have off from school (Im in Fargo, ND, he's in Billings) is Nov. 23-27. We can either hunt around Darby or around McLeod. My question is where do you think we have a better chance of filling our tags? I dont want to drive all the way to Darby if chances are slim. Any advice is appreciated.

P.S. My brother was in an accident this summer and broke his femur, he isnt quite 100% yet, so Im not sure how much hiking he can do, though Im sure if he has to he will. Will one place be easier for him?

Mcleod is south of Big Timber in the Gallatin national forest. I would like to get a bull, but would settle for a cow, just to put meat in the freezer.

From my experience South of Big Timber, it's pretty rough steep country, unless your on private land. I'd suggest somewhere around the Big Hole, maybe not quite to Darby. Most areas, around there, are either sex with your general tag. That may be true for Big Timber area as well, but I'd say you could find easier terrain somewhere in the Southwest part of the state.

Montana Tines cut me off at the pass. I think unit 319 would be a good bet for you guys if you want to bring some elk meat home. Darby would work too, as the last week of the season is either sex, but I hunted it pretty hard for the last week last year and never had a shot at a cow....

If you are interested in going to the bighole, pm me and I"ll point ya into some specific country. Its crowded, but that time of year it LOADED with elk.
