Not the biggest bull on the mountain by any means, however this bull had a lot of meaning to it, not just the bull, but the hunt itself did. Those who know my son and everything we went through in the last couple of years with him, made this years hunt even more the better. Due to things with him being in and out of hospitals and such made it tough for me to break away and hunt, however this year I drew a bull archery tag and was hell bent to go and be successful. When I found out I drew, I started the prep right away, getting the bow ready, gear, vehicles, horses, etc. But everything kept coming apart on me, tranny went out, axles on the horse trsiler were bad, you name it, it happened. So after me and Murphy got real aquainted, it was getting closer to season. With little time to scout I located a couple of bulls that would go about 330 to 350, so I decided to watch them and hunt them on opening day. I arrived two days early and found four camps within a mile of where those elk were at, so opted to try the back side of that ridge that I had seen them on. Night before the opener, we scouted some of that area and found one good bull that we decided to go after in the morning. Opening morning found us up above the meadow we saw him in the evening before. No sign of him or his cows. Moved to the next draw, still nothing. Kept coming up with zero. Finally I spotted a 6x6 in a wallow and decided to watch him and see where he went. He kept coming below us,walking along the tree line, but did not commit to coming up any of the draws until about a half mile later, he started making his way up the draw. We set up above him and did some calling..he answered. Called some more, got a good response from him. We were trying to get him into a opening on my left which would have been ideal. It got real quiet for a bit, and next thing I knew, he bugled again and was right behind me, not 10 or 20 feet, but RIGHT behind me. He moved to the left, I drew back, he started to walk, then stopped. CRAP!!!(I think I drew a tad bit early) I am at full draw and he stopped, turned around went behind me to my right,(I was facing to my left) stopped, bugled, turned around came back over to my left, stuck his head out about eight feet from the end of my broadhead. Scared us both. He jumped out and looked at me, I drilled him at 14 yards, he ran about 25 yards and piled up. That was one of the greatest hunt of my life. I cannot put into words the feelings I had after this hunt. Absolutely awesome. Thsnk You to everyone who made it possible.
