Hunting in wolf territory?

LAST EDITED ON Sep-25-05 AT 06:58PM (MST)[p]As I noted in my thread "What would you have done?", I just returned from a hunt in an area that has a significant wolf presence. The only sign of elk I found was the wads of elk hair in the wolf turds that were everywhere I went.

What do you do when you find an area like this? Keep hunting but go into the deepest thickest cover? Move over one ridge? Three ridges? To a completely different drainage? Are the elk likely to move back in later?

Thanks.

Paul, plenty of wolves in my honey hole in North Idaho. So far the bull population is still really good.If the population goes down in one of my spots I move. The main river drainage I hunt has elk in every side drainage. Some are bursting with elk & some only have a few. Keep moving till you find some elk to hunt.

Or, you could always hunt wolf instead!

I killed a 330 bull on the 14th of September in a wolf/grizzly area. Lots of elk most of the time but they do move. Keep at it and you will score. I've talked with people that have been huting the same area for years and they said that it's never been better for elk.

Thanks for the replies. It is interesting to see the wide array of opinions on the effects wolves have. I have heard everything from "the wolves have totally destroyed elk hunting" to "it's better than ever". I guess I just need to find more time somehow to spend in the mountains instead of being in my office wishing I was in the mountains.

The main thing I have learned is that it seems more important now than ever to be able to be mobile, and not fixed to one base camp option.
