My buddy Joe and I drove through the night on the 9th and arrived at the trailhead on Sat morning. My buddy Randy and his daughter Karen had just arrived also. We packed into a remote area and set up camp. Randy was only able to hunt one day with us because he had to get back to work. This guy used to quit his job every year to go hunting!!
The evening Randy left I called a nice six point to 33 yards, too early to fill our tag so we let him walk. The next few days the sheep moved into our area and the elk moved out. We were having to go farther and farther to get into the bulls. In a different area I called in another six point (nice herd bull) to 35 yards and we missed that opportunity. Long story behind that one!
Randy was going to come in on Sat to pack us out and into a different area. We hunted that morning and I glassed a couple bulls a long ways away. We looked at each other and said "let's go". When we got in the area, the elk had moved and ended up winding us. But, at the same time that happened, we heard some other bulls bugeling. We were on top of what was really a cliff. I looked down and saw a nice five point on the flat below. Joe wanted a five point or better for his first bull. I set him up about 50 yards below me and started the cow calls. That bull came straight up the cliff and Joe drilled him. Needless to say the bull ended up at the bottom! Thank God that Randy was on his way with the horses.

On the way to get Joes elk out, I went on a rodeo ride and got thrown from the horse and he stepped on my leg. No broken bones but a nice horseshoe shaped bruise on my thigh. We packed the elk to our camp and stayed another night. Randy blew up his transmission and was unable to pack us in to the other area so we opted to just hunt on foot from the trailhead.
Randy told us that the road to the trailhead was real bad and nobody should be hunting there. Well, when we arrived there were two good size camps. We ended up camping near three guys, Greg, Ken and Chris. Great guys. They informed us that the area was hammered with muzzleloaders the week prior. OUCH! I looked at athe area and maps and told Joe that the only way I was going to get an elk was to go over the top, where nobody else was going. Joe looked at the mountain and said, "you are going by yourself".
That afternoon I went over the top and arrived at prime time. I spotted two bulls in one of the few openings at 10,000 feet. There were at least half a dozen other bulls bugeling. Elk heaven. I slid down a rock ledge and when I ran out of cover I started calling. I called one of the bulls right in to 25 yards. The hill was at least 45 degrees. I had my left foot on a rock to keep from sliding and was sitting on my butt when I shot (steep). I hit him perfect, high entrance and low exit. I cow called right after the hit and stopped him within ten yards. I drilled him again in the shoulder and broke him down. When he expired he started to roll like you see in the sheep video's. Scary. I thought he would be a spike when I got to him. He got hung up in some quakies.
When I got to him I couldn't believe the size of this animal. He was at least 150-200 pounds bigger than my Tule elk. Awsome. I'm pissed at my pics. I was by myself, dark, no tripod, and the steep hill. The pics don't do this bull justice. He is a P&Y six point on one side and a weird seven point on the other side. He is missing his third, has a 5 " dropper off his main beam and a N/T point on his first! I'm very happy with him.

I quartered him and got back to camp with the antlers at 1:30am. It took Joe an I two days to pack the meat off the mountain. On the last trip we took Ken and Greg with us to show them the area and I called in a nice four point that Ken shot , after Greg missed!!! Here's a pic of the group, great pic with lots of smiles! I called in 10 legal bulls into bow range and we killed three of them!!
