It was fairly tough this year on The Jicarilla. I saw a number of bulls early the first morning, and finally got to see a good bugler about 8AM. We moved on him and got to 300 yards. Then he and his cows bedded down. We just laid down across the canyon and waited them out for 4 1/2 hours.
He got up, bugled some, raked trees and herded up his cows. I could have shot at 275 yards, but figured it was too far to look good on film. They went over a ridge and out of sight. So...we played the wind and made a mile circle keeping in touch with an occasional bugle. Finally we found him at the edge of a sage flat raking a tree with his back to us. He was 106 yards, and I dropped him in his tracks. JT Harden and Anthony Brown both filmed the hunt for the Drury's and Hunter's Journal. He was a 300 class bull. I have killed bigger, but he was a good bull, close for camera.
We had 3 other bulls killed over the next couple of days ranging from about 300-340. Eddie Stevenson from Remington passed a couple good bulls early due to the camera, then the weather and bugling got pretty bad. I hunted with Eddie on day 3 and he had a 5 second shot opportunity at a good 6x6, but it would have been no footage.
Day 4, we had no chances, but heard 3 bulls in a big valley right at dark. The morning of the last day, we went there and heard bulls. We called up a small broken up 6x6, but Eddie still didn't want him. We heard one more good sounding bull and moved on him. Finally we found him and slipped withiin 150 yards. Eddie smacked him with a .300 ultra mag, and the hunt was done. He was a brute and a great 1st bull for Eddie.
As usual the trip was a blast, and I got to seee friends I have made in NM and visited for the past 3 falls. The action was a bit slower this year, but we were lucky and went 5 for 5 on good bulls. Glad to be home for a while and leaving for mulies and antelope in WY on 10/19.
