Everyone see the Trib this morning? Kennecott plans to build a ski resort, college campus and other large developments on their land in the East Quirrhs.

Nevermind that it's the last swath of quality winter range for the Wasatch Front.......where do they expect the elk to go now I wonder?

Doesn't really matter. The elk in that herd have some wierd genetics.

The biggest and best elk on the Oquirrhs are clear on the south end anyways.

I guess if all you EVER think about in terms of wildlife is trophy quality, then you are right.

Doesn't matter?? Where do you think those elk winter, Horny, huh? I wasn't talking about trophy quality, I was talking about losing critical winter range. And I mean 'critical', as in that last part, as in when it's gone, that's it there is no more!

Oh well, I guess they'll all just go somewhere else.....how can you be so apathetic? Do you enjoy seeing the monster homes on Traverse Ridge? The scrub oak that's been destroyed around Jordanelle (yah, hold yer hats there wait 'til you see what's coming), Deer Run and Mayflower?

It kills me that folks ##### about loss of hunting opportunity, shrinking populations, and respond with apathy to the loss of habitat.

Thats too bad. I really enjoy going out and watching the deer and elk on Kennecott's property during the SUmmer and Winter. I dont like seeing this happen, but the mine is going to dry up eventually. THey are just looking for another way to keep their pockets fat.

"Progress" is a great thing.....isnt it!?!??!

Not that it would have done any good, but did the general public have any type of input on this? This morning on the news was the first I had heard about it.

That sucks, yeah pretty soon, were all going to have animals in our backyards with all the habitat loss. Too bad.

yeah it sucks, but what can you do? they will eventually end up filling the open pit with trash one day because what else will the mountain be good for in their opinion? they use the resources, tear the whole damn mountain range up and when they are done with that they sell it off like property on a Monopoly game board. They have never given a damn about wildlife and never will, I feel bad for the ecosystem but this has been a long time in the making.

Thanks for your rsponse Bull.

What I mean is there isn't really anyhting you can do to change it PERIOD.

At least they are not ruining a stellar place with trophy quality animals. Yes I enjoy looking at them. I think it sucks taking animal habitat. I enjoyed hunting traverse ridge and many other areas. The fact of the matter is we live in a metropolitan valley and sooner or later it will all be filled.

I never said I was happy about it all I'm saying is at least it is not some other unit. It could be worse, but with Day Break development going on and the financial situation of Kennecott one could have seen this coming for along time

I withdraw my statement saying it doesn't really matter because I feel it does.

Horny, thanks for that-really, I was shocked that it sounded like you didn't care.

And I think the EIS is a great way to go, I'm going to check into it...because I am fairly certain that the area has already been documented by the state as critical wildlife habitat.

Trophy or not, Kenecott country has always produced a lot of deer and elk. One step closer to a modern world with all the conviences close to home. Did I hear right that they are building huge communities where I used to glass wintering animals in the dry fields that way. I grew up in riverton and pheasant hunted and lived a good life roaming those hils, I dont want to go back and see the devestation...I mean "progression" that area has made. I heard even a Mormon temple was to be built out that way, is that correct?.....

You heard right.

They are building an LDS temple and more than 300,000 people are predicted to move there in the upcoming years. They are also building a small lake as well.

This is the scary part. The construction company I fly for has to have every employee hazmat certified to lay strom drain, water, or sewer pipe in the development. Makes you wonder about the subsurface water conditions for the mine!

Horny, you are so right about that! Not to mention that the reason given for not allowing folks in Coons Canyon to hunt is that the EPA requires air monitors, which Kennecott has never wanted to install.

I'm sure the lack of vegetation on the north end where the smelter stack stands is just a coincidence!!

Well, if they are going to destroy all of the habitat, do you think they would let me on their property to help "thin the herd"? :) Theres a nice 40+ incher I'd like to hang my tag on!

Never say never!! I am sure a majior development had to go through city councl meetings and i am sure it had public hearings? My question did you go> have they had finale approval?? Maybe it is not to late.
This sucks

I'd be very suprised if the EIS were not approved. Progress is not without wreckage in its wake.

Also, groups like RMEF, MDF need to spend their dollars wisely. Acreage in the benches of the SLC area is relatively very expensive compared to other winter ranges that should be preserved.

But, it'd be nice to see some means of getting funding for wildlife out of this deal....probably could get local sportsmens groups to put up enough of a stink to get at least some "blood money" for preservation elsewhere out of the deal.

not much for commercials, but the rocky mountain elk foundation

provides hope. join send them a little cash.

really,, they do some good, they buy some land (preserve it)

100 years from now it will matter.

The phase out the mine plan is going to happen over the next 15years, Hunting and wildlife habitat is going to be a part of there overall development. I'm surprised they announced it so soon
