Well after a long and drug out hunt in Idaho's unit 75 my wife got a nice bull thanks to the help of Bob Wharf (SmokeStick)
Bob called me on thursday of last week and after talking for a few I told him I was headed back up with my wife for the last day of her hunt in Idaho thats when we found out that my wifes tag was good in one of Bobs leases and he told me he could help her get a good bull and we needed to get up there so we grabed a few things and headed up we got up there at about 10pm and headed up to the bunkhouse and what a treat that was after hunting in a tent trailer for over a week
Bob said we would be able to harvest a bull on friday but I was very skepticale as we had hunted for over 7 days and only had one chance at a bull and it was not a very good one
Anyway we woke up friday morning and got everything in his truck and headed down the road thats when I got excited as a large number of elk where headed out of the alfalfa fields and headed into the hills it was still a hour or so before shooting light so we headed down the road a mile or so and hiked in to get above the elk
We had timed it about perfact as we had 3 or 4 bulls pass within shooting range but Bob said we could do better I was thinking hell its the last day and we are getting greedy thats when Bob pointed out a nice 330 class Bull just a Valley away he asked if we wanted to go after it or a smaller 260 class 6x6 that we had just passed on after thinking about it for a few seconds I thought hell there is a lot of elk running around lets go after the bigger one and then try for a smaller one latter
Well after a mile or so hike around the valley we could not find the Bull so now we was farther from the truck then from the bunkhouse so we hunted back to the bunkhouse kicking out one small rag and a spike and a few cows Bob still saying we could do better
Well after getting to camp and going and getting a couple atvs we sat and talked to the land owner and he had been seeing the same elk we had been seeing that morning
Bob wanted to look over some more areas and we headed out looking over the property we made a small hike to a area Bob had been seeing some elk and I did spot a smaller 4x4 rag bull that Bob latter kicked out but we passed on him even though it was getting late in the day
We walked back to the bikes and Bob said he would like to go look in the same area we was in the morning so off we went when we got close Amy spotted some cows feeding down a draw so we watched them for a few and then we could hear a faint bugle up higher on the mountain we snuck down into the canyon and started to see more and more elk thats when I seen the bull from that morning with 37 cows and a smaller rag bull we was 900 yards away and needed to get much closer
We headed in trying to not be seen by the Bull or any of his cows and we ran out of cover and the cows where starting to look over at us thats when Bob asked me to range the bull it was 390 yards and I could not see any way of getting closer
So we set up a tri-pod and got Amy ready to shoot at the shot we could hear the sweet pop come back of a solid hit but the bull did not fall he headed down the steep hillside but the cows headed up so he tryed to go up thats when Amy took another shot the bull did a little jig and fell
We watched the bull threw the spotting scope tell we knew he was down for good before we all got excited the cows finnaly headed out and we headed over to the downed bull Bob and Amy took one way and I took another we all got to the bull at the same time and it was just starting to get dark so we took a few pictures and a couple hours latter we had the bull cut in half and loaded on the 4 Wheeler
It must have been a sight to see us driving the one ATV with all 3 of us and the Bull also
All I can say is thanks to Bob as we was on the last hour of the last day before we harvested my wifes best bull to date and we owe a lot of thanks to Bob for that
