colorado preference points

Does anyone know how many points it takes for a nonresident to get a permit to hunt unit 61 first rifle season bull elk ? Thanks Gibby

Don't forget that tags taking 5 or more points to draw are going to get a lot harder for non-residents to draw starting next year. You'll need to read the recaps and summaries closely to get an estimate of required points for next year.

RE: Colorado preference points

txhunter58, I looked at the link you posted & still couldn't answer his question, do you know what it says ?

RE: Colorado preference points

It says that it took a minimum of 10 points for a non-res. to draw a 1st season bull tag in unit 61 this year.

There were 44 tags for non-residents that were drawn with the following points: 2 with 13pp, 1 with 12pp, 10 with 11pp, and 31 with 10pp. There were 6 unlucky applicants that had 10 points but did not draw. There were 106 applicants with 9 points that now have 10 points. I would assume the minimum needed will be 10 points again next year, but if license numbers stay the same there will only be 22 non-resident tags next year.

Colorado is changing the non resident quotas next year to an 80/20 split for areas requiring 5 or more points so the required points for 61 will go up.

RE: Colorado preference points

It will be impossible to predict odds in individual units as it relates to non-resident preference points with the recent changes. I know that I will be forced to give up on the unit that I was "holding" out for and switch to a unit needing less points. Thus I will screw up the odds for the unit I switch too. They previously kicked NR's out of the RFW program which drastically screwed up the remaining public units odds and now we get to do it again. I wish they would have transitioned this in over a 3 year period so as not to cause chaos in the indivdual units. Oh well, this should give the landowner tag sellers a great shot in the pocket book as everyone scrambles for a new plan.

RE: Colorado preference points

I was just getting close to draw a good archery elk tag.I am a non-resident and do think residents should get 80% and non-resident get 20% of the good unit tags,it is only fair. With this in place I wonder if residents will now switch over to better rifle elk units that they now might have a chance to draw where before they did not have a chance? It will be a no brainer, I think residents will be changing to harder to draw units now,Time will be the determining factor on this subject.Nobody can tell what the true odds will be now until after the draws are complete in 2006.How many will blow a few points this year on lesser qaulity units just to hunt? And save a few to build on again? That will happen also to those who want out of the waiting game and just want to hunt before they die waiting for that elusive permit.
Good luck, should be some happy resident tag holders in 2006 and if you think about it that is the way it should be I guess.Look at the surrounding states odds for non-residents for high qaulity tags it is only fair to the residents they get a higher % more tags.

RE: Colorado preference points

Yes we need to throw in that the CWC is considering point banking next year as well. That should really make the draw interesting next year if the idea passes.

I did not think the 80/20 split for higher pnt units was a sure thing yet? Is it?

Just curious
