HAS ANYONE BEEN DEER HUNTING IN ARIZONAS UNIT 9 THIS YEAR?HAVE A LATE BULL TAG AND AM NOT SEEING MUCH.I WAS HOPING THERE WERE SOME DEER HUNTERS OUT THERE THAT COULD OFFER A LITTLE INFO.
THANKS!!

Your in for a tough hunt, 9 is a very tough November hunt. Try looking at the very north west corner of the unit!

Super tough! That's what people don't tell you about 9 and 10! You just get to hear about the few lucky guys! Try walking Skinner Ridge alot and hunt just east of Tusayan on the Grand Canyon National Park boundry (walk, walk, walk). If you're interested in a guide for the last day or two, contact these guys. They've done real well on that hunt. www.arizonatrophyguideservice.com

thanks for the info.isn't skinner ridge were game and fish sends everyone?thanks!

I,m leaving Wednesday to set up camp (probably on FR 320) for my Daughter's hunt (starts Friday). She has taken 3 cows and a bull in the unit in the last 7 years. The late rifle hunt is tough to horn hunt as they are not making noise and there are few areas to glass. Most of the unit is fairly thick (PJ in the lower part and big pine in the higher areas) but there are a lot of elk.
It's hard not to have a chance at an elk if you are in the unit for all the days.
Good Luck

Hey Neb,
I'll be in there with my older brother (he has the tag). We've already got our camp trailer in there right off of FR 320. Maybe we'll see you in there? We'll be driving a white chevy 4X4 single cab and a white double cab Ford F-150. I'll only be there from Thursday to Saturday due to work, but maybe we'll see you in there.
good luck! Hope youre daughter keeps bringing home the elk!

I'll keep an eye out.
I'm leaving in ~30 minutes.
I'll probably set the wall tent 3-5 miles before Bucklar.
I drive a scratched, green Toyota tundra 4dr.with a Uof A sticker.

The warm temps are going to make it REAL tough this year. I was in 5BN last weekend. Got up there at daylight and noticed my jacket was not in the truck. I was afraid I would freeze to death hiking around, but when I got out and started walking I didn't even need a jacket and by 10:00 I had put the sweatshirt in the pack too.

I guide this hunt almost every year and it is always tough. Lots of scouting is usually the key to this hunt.........

So how did everybody fare on the late elk hunt? Stan?
We ended up taking a smallish 6X6 that was all broken up and had part of a barb wire fence all tangled up in his horns. We got lucky considering we only had two days to get him.

Neb- sorry we missed you, it was a quick trip. We ended up camping off of FR 305.

Let's hear how everybody did!

LAST EDITED ON Nov-24-05 AT 07:10PM (MST)[p]We have a Dec 2 opener for cow elk!!! Where have you been seeing the ladies out there fellas??? I need to have My Wife get her first big game animal... Thanks to all that reply.

We got back yesterday as I had to work last night. My Daughter passed a spike the first day. We hunted 5 days and she killed a small 6x6 yesterday morning, she was pleased as it was her 5th elk. She's 17 and wanted to stay one more day as I was supposed to be back to work on Tuesday but we made some phone calls and got the extra day. She had a shot at a monster but forgot to turn the saftey off!! (I wish I could say I've never done that).
Anyway, she got a shot at the smaller bull and cashed in.
She could have shot at least 15 cows during the 5 days.
I'll be back up on Thursday for the cow hunt to help my younger Daughter, brother and my Dad. The upper basin had a lot of hunters as did most of the rim area. We just finished getting the elk in the freezer.
Good Luck

Congrats to "E" Nate! Email me a pic and I'll post it if you want. My daughter has a cow hunt in unit 8 next Friday, hopefully she'll finally get her first elk.

Well I got them on the elk the 1st two days but couldnt get it done. Now we are planning on going on this elk hunt cow in unit 9 this friday. Hopefully the wife gets her first cow!!!

Northwest corner: Are you kidding? All the elk drop off on the Northeast corner. There you go again telling people where the elk aren't. Any ideas for the late Navajo elk hunt? I've been scouting pretty hard but what little water I've found is frozen as its been real cold up there but no snow in sight. I tried to call your numbers with no luck but think I found your work number and will call.
