After a disapointing unit 8 az. hunt, I'm wondering about 2006.
I will not apply in Az. again, will continue To apply in N.Mex.
Have a friend from Wy. who is recommending unit 100 there, anyone know anything about that unit?

UNIT 100 IS IN THE TOP 1 OR 2 UNITS IN THE STATE IN BEING DIFFICULT TO DRAW. SOMEWHERE IN THE 1-3 PERCENTILE RANGE TO DRAW. CHECK DOW W/SITE FOR CURRENT NUMBERS. YD.

Good luck!As YD indicates ,you may have a long wait along with me and many others.

Sorry to hear about your difficult hunt in AZ unit 8, I am curious though, what was so difficult about unit 8, I have been putting in for that area for years and would love to get drawn in there?

Not difficult, diaaspointing! Az put 425 hunters in there, people where all over. Dad saw two small bulls opening morning, and that wa all we saw. It appears to me that the unit has way to many roads, yes we where able to make it back in up to two miles but you still bumped into people. I'd look at other units, and how many tags where issued before i'd put in again(I won't, As it appears they are changing the process). On top of that the Forest service decided it would be a great week to do controlled burns in the middle of the unit. Warm days and a nearly full moon, and way to much pressure, forced the elk to go nocturnal.IMHO.

Sorry about your hunt in Arizona. NM has some great elk hunts that will surely make up for the pain. look at unit 4 and unit 2. great harvest rates and not as loaded with hunters. they can be tough to draw, but they are worth looking at.

Not sure about unit 100. LG is right about units 2 and 4, gonna have to hurry to get in the draw. Unit 4 is also a very tough draw, but I have a line on some private land hunts, no draw required, if you are interested.

LAST EDITED ON Mar-18-06 AT 09:20PM (MST)[p]I will let you know about area 100 after I hunt it this fall. I was one of the lucky 4.74% that drew a non-resident special elk tag. I do know that the bull to cow ratio is 81:100, a 330+ bull is most likely, and you can usually load the elk whole. It's more like a Wyoming antelope hunt.

With the new preference point system in place, I hope you got in on the ground floor. If not, there are now 201 applicants in line for the 7 to 8 tags that will be available in the preference pool. Basically this is a once in a lifetime tag. Best of luck to you!
