LAST EDITED ON Dec-18-05 AT 04:26PM (MST)[p]Went up on a cow hunt this past friday with a couple of friends. Tons of elk, Spotted the first herd nearly from the truck. It was also cold!!!(4 degrees) Headed up after them, packing the sleds because we were so confident. They had gone over the ridge, so we hurried up there. We rounded the corner, and there they were in all their late season glory. About 40 head, one 5-point.
Closest was about 300, Our buddy Christian fired first, clean miss. He fires again, another miss. The herd then decided it's time to leave. Up over the ridge they go, and we are after them. When we catch up they are far. We notice one is limping, we figure Chritian must have hit it. Christian is still down the mountain(not as young of legs) It is just about over the next ridge so Jeran decides his 7mmRUM is up to the task and proceeds to put his bullet into his cow at just over 400 yards. She stubbles up and over the ridge, this is where we find her. A really fun day.

Jeran and his cow. It was a big one.

Jeran and his brother.

Come to find out, her right front leg had been badly broken when she was younger and that is what was causing the limp. The bone was all deformed with a piece jutting out near the joint. Weird. Was really tough to skin out.

Nice to have a few people there. We were about two miles from the truck, but it was mostly down hill. And once the quarters were in the sleds it was pretty easy. I should have taken a picture of Jeran riding his sled and meat down the mountain, was pretty funny, until he had to bail to miss the trees!

Christian, missed an easy 250 yard shot at a bedded cow 3 times. Come to find out his gun was shooting 2' high and way left. To the range, and we'll be back up to get him one.

Way to go Jeran! That is a great gun, thanks for having me along. We'll have to get all that video on a DVD soon.

I figure I ought to say, for all you ethical police out there, Jeran was wearing orange. It was a heavier coat, and it was getting warm. Sad that I have to say that huh? But I know it would be brought up.

Thats a hell of a shot!! Whered he get his bullets, I bet they are custom loaded by some pro......Nice pics, man!!!! And whos the other guy in the pic with the bad back???? cya

sounds like a fun hunt jas. My brother-in-law saw some elk just to far to shoot. hopefully they will get some by the end of january. hope you did good on the goose hunt.

PS LET'S SEE THE VIDEO

Nice story and pics, any elk is a good elk. I'm afraid you're getting ethics confused with safety. You don't say what state you got your elk in, in Idaho you don't have to wear orange. But it is recommended. Anyhow congratulations.

The hunt took place in Utah. 400 sq inches are required here. There are a few folks on this site that tend to look for every ethical and lawful violation before they know the story, so I thought I would throw that in.
