info for Guided ML Elk hunt wanted

Hello,
We are looking for information on a quality ML elk hunt. Not the most expensive, as we do work for a living but that "once in a lifetime" for us Ohio Deer hunters Western Elk hunt. We are looking for personal experiences and people who will vouch for the outfitter providing a quality experience. We have searched the web and local show contacts but really want that personal recommendation from those who have gone before us. We are experienced Bow/Shotgun/ML deer hunters from Ohio who are in our mid forties and are in good shape (for flatlanders) If you would rather not spread your info out to the public we would like to talk to you offline or via email.

I can tell you of a outfitter to avoid hunting with and that would be "United states Outfitters" I had the displeasure of using them a few years back ( before they started all the crap in Arizona ) this was the first time and probably the last time I ever used a guide service . Me and my buddies also have to work for our money and these guys knew very little about the area or Elk for that matter .

There are good outfitters out there but USO is not one of them .
good luck with your search but be careful .

When you spend that kind of money and are let down like we were it sticks in you craw for a long time .

Avoid USO, look at NM, going guided gets you into a different drawing from unguided, odds can be great and the hunt is GREAT. Peak times in NM, before gun season, bugling etc. Best time of year. Plan to wait 4-5 years for a good tag.

I am from Ohio and normally bowhunt, this year went muzzy and got this one, unguided.

For a muzzleloader hunter NM is your best choice, many states do not offer muzzleloader hunts, or they are after gun hunts. CO is also a good choice, but if you draw a decent tag in NM it will be a far better experiance most likely.

Why go guided? DIY hunts are cheapier and more satisfying.

Why Guided. ?
We are both very busy with family and jobs to be able to give our self the type of hunt we want. Several trips to maybe even see some.

Remington worked out well, I know the gun well now and know what I have to do to make sure it works, it has never failed me in the field under any conditions.

Again NM, as four outfitters I do not know any well enough to say for sure but I have spoken at length with Jim Welles (JFRCW ranch consultants) and he is a stand up, hard working nice guy, I would reccomend him, same for Kiowa, guys I know who have hunted with them have been happy.

Good luck and make sure you pick your area right, great areas make for great hunts, Draw a good tag and you will have the trip of a lifetime.

I had a buddy go with Ray Milligan from Milligan Brand Outfitters. He hunted in NM, but I think they also guide in CO. He had a great time and shot a 300 class 5x5.
Which ever guide you choose, make sure you call plenty of their references!

I've hunted with Elite Outfitters you can check them out at Elite outfitters.com they are good guys and will give you a good elk hunt . They have many repeat customers and you can call them all for referances, not one bad word was said about them when I was checking them out and I talked to about fifty guys. I know they are for real, check them out on the web and give Brian a call. Good Luck

We are creating a list of favorable contacts and have added the ones received here to it. does anyone have any info or ratings of the different units in NM for ELK?

Buckrake, bottom line is great units - TOUGH odds, especially for muzzleloader (this is the best season by far to hunt in NM).

1% odds to 50% (in so so units - guided applications)

If you want PM me and I will give you my phone number, I have hunted NM 3 times, and have followed the units and researched it weekly for 7 years. Do not want to draw attention to some underrated units.

I do know what units to apply to in NM, and as always I feel this is the first step, then find a good guide there.
