Utah General Archery Elk

LAST EDITED ON Jan-30-06 AT 06:10PM (MST)[p]Will bugles and reeds be effective during the General SPIKE bull hunt? Are the bulls bugling enough by then?? I plan on archery hunting this year. I need some info. What tequniques work best for the General archery elk?? Do scent eliminators or cover scents work? what is the best SPIKE elk call out there? What types of calls do Spike elk respond to the best.

Yeah those calls are all effective, weather makes somewhat of a difference. What do you mean do cover scents work? Don't you believe the manufacturers? Once you are sweating bad enough those items don't tend to work as well. The best scent cover-up is the direction the wind is blowing. Spike elk follow there mommy, so use a mouth call cow talkin call whatever, but you gotta get mommy do come and see what you are and then the baby will follow.

Spikes don't have a lot of experience and will make mistakes. I've found that the cow mew will bring them in sometimes and the mew that a lost calf makes will sometimes bring them in. Best advice is to just find the elk and work with them without allowing them to smell you.
