The first year I ever applied to Utah was 1998 and put in for South Slope Diamond Mountain because of the low number of tags, I pretty much figured I wouldn't draw. Well I drew an any weapon LE tag we went and had a fairly good hunt. I took my first bull on that hunt a 3X4. As I remember there was alot of public land but not many huge bulls on public. We were running out of time when I took my elk. I have read alot on here that it is a really bad unit can anybody shed light on the unit these days. It was close to Vernal and I like hunting in the cedar/juniper type stuff. Not looking for anything but is it good/bad or ugly.

It is good if you just want to shoot elk fur.

It is bad and ugly compared to every other unit in Utah.

Do you think a guy has a realistic shot at a 300 inch bull on public land? I applied as a non resident myself. Thanks - Brian

From what I know, a 300" bull is possible. But on the other units, you are pretty much gauranteed a 397"-412" bull just for showing up, so you might want to think about that.

Brian,

If you draw out cpontact me and I'll tell you what I remember.

Mike

Dimond is doing better than it ever has in my oppinon, but is still not up to par with most of the other units. A guy I work with killed a 345 bull but I think it was on private property. But I heard that there were two 360 bulls and several 330-350 bulls killed. And a few of them on public.
