UNIT 45 NM Help

Hello all, I drew unit 45 buck. I have never hunted this area and I will be starting to scout in the next couple of weeks. Can anyone point me in the right direction? It is a big unit, has anyone hunted this unit before? Any help will be greatly appreciated.

The iron gate and jacks creek/ Panchuela areas always produce. Of course you will have lots of competition. The skyline trail area north of elk mountain is also an area i would look.

I cannot offer any help, but often wonder if the above timberline deer hunting is any good?

I have heard from a previous warden that during Bighorn sheep relocation efforts on Pecos Baldy they have seen some absolute giant muleys. I do know for a fact that during the youth hunt, some real big deer are taken every year. They are there but its BIG country.

If it weren't for the fact that I have access to private land in a neighboring unit 45 would be one of my top choices every year for deer. But, mule deer and elk are pressured by poaching as a result of the early August rifle bear hunts and can make it difficult to find any mature bucks remotely close to any road except for the late youth hunts. A great place to start if I were in your shoes would be off Hyde park road up towards the ski base. There are some amazing areas to be found up there and plenty of un-pressured game.
