LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-06 AT 03:03PM (MST)[p]Solid 330 up to 350ish. Beautiful elk though

LAST EDITED ON Feb-13-06 AT 08:23PM (MST)[p]Are you kidding he's probably scores eleventy billion and 3/8. or bigger

Awesome bull. His main beam seems a little short, but I'm still gonna say in the 350 area. There's a lot of inches in those tines, and he seems fairly wide.

I'm even guessing he's a Wasatch County bull;)?

I have an observation. If 95% of the guys here were sitting on his bloody carcass taking pictures he would score 380.

Since it is a live picture he scores 300.

What gives? He is a solid bull with good bottoms including his thirds. Maybe his beams hurt him a little, maybe his seconds could be a little longer, but the rest of him looks pretty good to me.

he ain't gonna score anything if he doesn't get something to eat soon. he's lookin' sorta poor. mane is all sluffed off, hump is all boney. doesn't look like a real old bull either, but the winter is showin' on him badly. he'll score a little over 350.

What gives? Lack of length on his 5th's and mainbeams mostly--he's a good solid bull, I still think this bull will gross close to 350, but he's short of the 360 mark my friend.

LAST EDITED ON Feb-14-06 AT 06:55PM (MST)[p]Yes, what gives?

Now I am not questioning 350-370, but what I am questioning is 330? 340? What gives!

Lets look back at the Tuffbucker bull. The guy who kills it says 380, I am still thinking 370 by my uneducated guess, but most here say 330-340 on the hoof and after it is dead? Is this in to shoot them and call them 380 and look at some other guys picture and call it 330?

If that bull is "only 350" then I have seen way too many 300-320 bulls killed on Utah units in the photo gallery.

I agree his beams may lack a bit. I also agree that his left fifth is short. He does have good thirds. His browtines are real good in my opinion. Decent mass. Maybe not 370, but I still say over 360.

If he was 330 I would shoot his ass and call him 378.;-)

Where is he Mountain Hunter? You keep an eye on him and I will put in for the unit he is on. I will kill him and we can have a elk taping party. Time is running out. I need to know soon so I can amend my application.;-)

ktc, the bull Tuffbucker had the great pictures of was definately opposite of what happens most of the time with ground shrinkage. He was officially scored last month.He grossed 388 and netted 377 and change. His main beams scored over 60"

Antler1 beat me to it. I have been watching this thread and thinking 357 the whole time.

Here is a picture of my 2005 NM bull that grosses 357.

KTC, I lean on your side of the thinking.

Alan, the bull in the picture definitely resembles your bull. Both are very nice.

Rock,

I thought the Tuffbucker bull was very good. My point was that I think I thought him to be 370+ or so. A guy tapes him at 380+ and I cannot say that I disagree even if he still looks 370ish to my uneducated eye. The problem I saw was that people were guessing this bull around 330-340? I know that is wrong. I knew it while he was alive and after he was dead it confirmed it. I was not seeing it until the numbers were posted. Then I could see where I was missing some stuff. Very good bull and I was in no way calling BS. I don't do that.

It just seems to me that when a guy gets a big bull people call BS on the score. I can say I will never post any bull of mine's score. When a guy posts a live picture it seems like the scores drop dramatically. Just an observation by me.

I like these threads. Helps me to judge better. Alan's comparison helps a bunch. Another thing I hate is GROSS and NET. To me everything is gross. NETS are for fishing.

I would be suprised if he is over 340.
G1=18
G2=17
G3=14
G4=17
G5=8
Main=45
Mass=27
292+41" spread= 333

Seems to be lacking in beam length, mass and G5's. Good Bull, but I can't see how ya'll are getting in the 350s and above.

I'm with you KTC

G1 = 20"
G2 = 18"
G3 = 15"
G4 = 19"
G5 = 13"
MB = 49"
Mass = 28"
I Spread = 41"

365 and I feel I'm being conservitive. Nice bull shoot! No question it's over 350"

When I first looked at this thread I figured he went 365 points!! I still feel he does! 340 is too small in my opinion. But you know what they say about opinions!! <grin>

NET gets you in the record books. GROSS gets you challenged and criticized.

Utard scoring for sure, score the big side and then double it.

340 and I hope I get a chance at him come hunting season.

Neal

I would have to agree with ktc on this one I was thinking around 365-370 on this one. But I know until tape is put on them who knows right. Just trying to get better at field judging and in the process help you guys also.
Thanks for the replies.

Looks like a 350ish bull, but IMO the eye guards push him over 360, see the big curl on them.

I agree ALLMASS. Those are some killer eyeguards.

Fun debate listening to the opinions. Since I am not an expert, I cannot discount any guess. However I can disagree!

Mamma, I know what the record book requires. However, for me personally, the record book is not why I go. I prefer to hear gross score than net. I have no desire to dock the score because one tine is 3 inches shorter than the other. So for my personal record book, I like gross. I think there is a big difference between gross score and measuring the big side and doubling it. That is a gross misrepresentation.

Mountain Hunter, check your inbox!

Amen Allmass.

Mammas Boy, not sure I'd use the word tard and score this bull at 340 in the same sentance.

There are 21 scoreable's on a 6x6 bull elk.

So 340 or 360 isn't really more than an inch difference per scoreable account.

An inch average, other than maybe in mass 'apperance' would be a tough call. Like putting a 9 inch Mnt. Goat or a 10 inch Mnt. Goat at a distance. Tough call.

Hey 'Dub', what ya think he weight's in at?? haha (good article ya had).

It's all Good.

I don't know but I'd like to taste the stew from this one as well! :) Not likely to get the chance though!

most people will over look his fronts because the curl up i see some thinking 16-17 inches i say 18-21 decent mass and great uniform point length. spread is average. main beams averagish maybe a little short but, they may apear short because his point length is good . i say 360 ish .

I'll bet he's somewhere between 356 1/8 and 356 2/8. :D

Elk, more than any other antlered game, are overscored by hunters. Their antlers are big and it takes years to get proficient at scoring them in the field or from photos. This is a nice bull, one I would pull the trigger on, but I doubt he will go over 350. If I were you I would be more concerned what he scores this coming season, then get out there and whack him.

Tinman,

You hit it right on the nose. He's a great bull this year and will be even better next year!

MH

I said 368 when I saw it. He has alot of curve in his mains so they don't long really long. But I'm a flatlander who would love a shot a a bull like that. Nice pics.

It is difficult to score wtih these type of pictures but from what I see I have a hard time thinking it will not break 350!!
